Cougars' 15-4 Fifth Set Win Clinches Match Victory Over Humboldt

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (8-16, 7-10 CCAA) extended its win streak to seven matches over Cal Poly Humboldt (2-18, 1-16 CCAA) with a five set victory on Thursday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars got out early the opening set, taking an 8-2 lead with the Jacks coming back to close the gap to two points at 9-7 before CSUSM pulled away again at 15-10. Humboldt tallied six unanswered points to take a 18-16 lead and stayed on top for the rest of the set to clinch a 25-21 first set win.
  • Down 7-2 in the second set, CSUSM rallied back to take a 17-13 lead on Brynna Geibel's ace. CSUSM evened the match at one set a piece with a 25-21 second set win.
  • CSUSM led wire-to-wire in the third set, collecting a 25-19 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match behind a .281 attack percentage.
  • In the fourth set, the Cougars once again jumped out early but hit a wall at the 23-point mark as Humboldt rattled off six consecutive point to force a fifth set with a 25-23 win.
  • It was all CSUSM in the fifth set as the Cougars put together a .647 attack percentage with 12 kills on 17 attempts and one hitting error. CSUSM secured the match victory with a 15-4 victory.  
     

QUICK HITS

  • The 15-4 score in the fifth set is the fewest points allowed by a CSUSM opponent in a fifth set in program history.
  • The Cougars completed a series sweep over Humboldt with Thursday's victory after sweeping the Jacks in three sets in Arcata on Sept. 10.
  • CSUSM is now 7-2 in the all-time series against Humboldt and 3-0 went playing in The Sports Center.
  • The Cougars outblocked the Jacks 13-9.
  • Miechowicz's eight blocks were a career high.
  • Rader also tallied career highs with 14 kills and seven digs.
