Badrani, Laiwa-McKay Ready for NCAA Outdoor Championships

SAN MARCOS, Calif.Rasha Badrani and Kalathan Laiwa-McKay of the Cal State San Marcos men's and women's track & field teams will compete at the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships beginning on Thursday in Pueblo, Colorado.

400-METER HURDLES

  • Rasha Badrani will begin her quest for a national championship in the 400-meter hurdles on Thursday with the prelims set to begin at 6:40 p.m. (PT).
  • Should Badrani qualify for the final, she would compete on Saturday at 6:25 p.m. (PT).
  • Badrani enters the event with the top time time in Division II this season at 57.79 and was one of two with a time under 58 seconds this season.
  • This will be Badrani's third consecutive NCAA Championships appearance in the 400-meter hurdles.
  • At the 2024 NCAA Championships, Badrani secured All-America first-team honors with a seventh-place finish of 1:00.98.

 
SHOT PUT

  • Kalathan Laiwa-McKay will make his NCAA Championships debut as he competes in Saturday's shot put championship beginning at 4:05 p.m. (PT).
  • Laiwa-McKay is the first CSUSM student-athlete to compete in a field event at the NCAA Championships.
  • Laiwa-McKay posted the seventh-best shot put mark in Division II this season at the Franson Last Chance with a school record of 18.25 meters.
  • Laiwa-McKay is the West Region's lone entrant in a field of 22.

 
THE OLSON FILE

  • Head coach Torrey Olson begins his seventh season at the helm of the men's and women's track & field programs after taking over in the summer of 2018.
  • In 2019, Olson's men's and women's squads tallied three individual CCAA Championships for outdoor competition while the men's team earned five USTFCCCA All-West Region selections.
  • In 2022, Olson guided both teams to a combined three individual CCAA Championships, 13 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honors.
  • In 2023, the Cougars earned a combined five individual CCAA Championships, 19 All-CCAA selections, six outdoor and three indoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees under Olson's leadership.
  • In 2024, CSUSM had a combined five individual CCAA Champions, 16 All-CCAA selections and five outdoor USTFCCCA All-West Region honorees.
  • Olson came to CSUSM after spending three seasons as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at the Academy of Art University where his teams earned 50-plus All-American honors.
  • Olson served as the head cross country coach for the previous three years at Academy of Art.
  • In addition to the Academy of Art, Olson has also worked with the University of San Francisco and Pomona-Pitzer College.
  • A graduate of Pomona College in 2009, Olson also holds an MFA from St. Mary's College (2012).
