Cougars to Conclude Season at Humboldt, Chico

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (7-19, 7-13 CCAA) will wrap up its 2024-25 season this week, traveling to Cal Poly Humboldt (9-17, 8-12 CCAA) for a 5:30 p.m. game on Thursday before heading to Chico State (20-6, 15-5 CCAA) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tipoff. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars notched two victories in their final home games of the season last week. 
  • CSUSM led wire-to-wire for a 60-46 win over Stanislaus State on Thursday with Tatum Tamashiro recording 15 points. 
  • On Saturday, the Cougars celebrated Senior Day with a 74-52 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay with Camille Johnson pulling down a collegiate career-best 12 rebounds. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is leading the CCAA with 7.5 3-pointers per game and ranks 45th in Division II. 
  • The Cougars have the third-best 3-point field-goal percentage in the CCAA at 32.4%. 
  • CSUSM is averaging 3.3 blocks per game, ranking third in the conference.
  • Destiny Okonkwo ranks third in the CCAA with 1.32 blocked shots per game and fourth with 7.8 rebounds per game. She has been dominating on the offensive boards, ranking second with 4.0 per game.
  • Tatum Tamashiro is second in the CCAA with a 39.3 3-point field-goal percentage and averaging 2.19 3-pointers per game.

THURSDAY AT HUMBOLDT

  • The Lumberjacks sit in seventh place in the standings, three games back from sixth-place Cal State LA and the cutoff for the CCAA Tournament. 
  • Humboldt went 0-2 last week, falling to then-No. 2 Cal State Dominguez Hills 71-51 on Thursday before dropping a 70-40 decision at Cal State LA on Saturday. 
  • The Lumberjacks are leading the conference in 3-point attempts per game (24.0) but are third in made 3-pointers per game (7.0) and eighth in 3-point field-goal percentage (29.2%).
  • Humboldt's bench is contributing 20.3 points per game, ranking third in the CCAA. 
  • The Lumberjacks are averaging only 15.2 fouls per game, the third fewest in the conference. 
  • Kyori Lloyd is the only Lumberjack averaging double digits in points, coming in at 10.7 points per game while pulling down a team-best 6.6 rebounds per game. 
  • Earlier this season, CSUSM registered a 70-60 win over the Lumberjacks on Jan. 18 in The Sports Center. 
  • With an eight-game win streak on the line, the Cougars are 12-5 against Humboldt in the all-time series.

FINAL GAME AT CHICO

  • Prior to Saturday's game, Chico State will host Sonoma State on Thursday. 
  • The Wildcats are fighting for the second seed in the CCAA Tournament and enter the week two games back from second-place Cal Poly Pomona. The top two seeds will receive a bye in the CCAA Tournament on March 6-8, hosted by CSUSM in The Sports Center. 
  • After defeating Cal State LA on Thursday by a score of 73-70, the Wildcats handed then-No. 2 Cal State Dominguez Hills its first loss of the season with a 75-71 decision on Saturday. 
  • Chico State is the NCAA Division II leader in defensive rebounds at 31.3 per game. 
  • The Wildcats lead the CCAA in numerous categories including assists per game (17.6), fewest fouls per game (14.7) and 3-point field-goal percentage (36.9%). 
  • Three Wildcats are ranked in the top 8 in the CCAA in points per game with Makenzi Laporte leading the way at No. 4 with 16.0 per game, followed by Meadow Aragon in sixth (14.6) and Jordan Allfred in eighth (13.7). 
  • Aragon has recorded nine double-doubles this season, ranking her second in the conference and 39th in Division II. 
  • CSUSM leads the all-time series at 11-7 against Chico and is 5-3 when playing in Acker Gymnasium. 
  • Earlier this year, the Cougars put together a strong first half against the Wildcats, but eventually lost 75-61 on Jan. 16 in The Sports Center.

2024-25 OUTLOOK

  • First-year head coach Jana Pearson takes over the reins of the CSUSM women's basketball program following a three-year stint as an assistant at Westmont. 
  • The Cougars return six from last season's roster, including Kaitlyn Beall, Camille Johnson, Maddie Leiva, Rose Morse, Jade Ramirez and Tatum Tamashiro
  • CSUSM has seven newcomers for 2024-25, including transfers Kate Bobadilla, Rory Hetrick, Lucca Lowenberg, Destiny Okonkwo, Lyric Richardson and Kacie Slover while welcoming true freshman Maria Grobushin. 
  • The Cougars' 30-game slate includes two exhibition games, one at San Diego State and one at home against UC Riverside to go along with 12 home games and 16 road games in the regular season.
  • CSUSM will host the CCAA Championships for the second time in program history. In 2016, the Cougars welcomed both the men's and women's conference tournaments in The Sports Center despite not being able to compete due to competing in their final year of the NCAA Division II transition. 

THE PEARSON FILE

  • Jana Pearson became CSUSM's fourth coach in program history on June 20, 2024. 
  • Pearson's first win at CSUSM came on Jan. 18 with a 70-60 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt in The Sports Center. 
  • Pearson came to CSUSM from Westmont where she was the Warriors' assistant coach beginning in July 2021. 
  • Prior to Westmont, Pearson was the assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado from July 2018 through June 2021. Pearson served as the post player coach that included the 2020-21 Big Sky Conference Player of the Year. 
  • In four seasons at Vanguard, Pearson served as acting head coach in 40 games and helped the Lions to a 101-25 record with four NAIA National Tournament appearances that culminated in two Sweet 16s and one Final Four.
  • Pearson worked at Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee in her first full-time assistant coaching position from August 2010 to June 2014.
  • In her 14 years as an assistant coach, Pearson diligently recruited and coached four national players of the year, 18 All-Americans and over 80 scholar-athletes.
  • Pearson earned her bachelor's degree in Mathematics in December of 2007 from Harding University, where she was a member of the Harding women's basketball team for four years. While serving as a graduate assistant, Pearson graduated with a Master of Science degree in Counseling in 2010.
