No. 18 CSUSM Continues Long Homestead with CSUSB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 18 Cal State San Marcos softball team (29-10, 15-9 CCAA) will continue its 10-game homestand this week with a four-game series against Cal State San Bernardino (20-20, 12-12 CCAA). The Cougars will host the Coyotes on Friday with a 1 p.m doubleheader before wrapping the series up with a noon twinbill on Saturday. 

LAST TIME OUT

  •  The Cougars notched their second CCAA series sweep of the season, taking four games from Chico State last weekend. 
  • CSUSM posted back-to-back shutouts on Friday with an 8-0 six-inning, mercy-ruled victory in the series opener before recording a 5-0 win in the nightcap. 
  • The Cougars were not done as they collected their second 8-0 six-inning, mercy-ruled victory of the series in Saturday's doubleheader opener before posting a come-from-behind 8-7 win in the series finale.

  • The Cougars stayed steady at No. 18 in the latest NFCA Division II Coaches Poll with four others from the West Region appearing in the top 25 – No. 11 Western Washington, No. 13 Cal State East Bay and No. 21 San Francisco State. Concordia University Irvine dropped out and is now receiving votes. 
  • With the Chico State series sweep, CSUSM (15-9) moved up to second in the CCAA standings, three games back from leader Cal State East Bay (18-6) and one game ahead from San Francisco State (13-9). 
  • CSUSM stayed in the top spot in the CCAA with a .317 batting average. 
  • The Cougars remain at No. 2 in the conference in on-base percentage (.384) and slugging percentage (.419). 
  • CSUSM ranks second in the CCAA with 13 sacrifice flies this season. 
  • CSUSM ranks ninth in NCAA Division II (third in the CCAA) with 19 double plays. 
  • The Cougars have the fourth-best fielding percentage in the CCAA at .965. 
  • CSUSM is third in scoring runs in the CCAA, averaging 5.10 per game. 
  • The Cougars have tallied 16 home runs, averaging 0.41 per game and ranking fourth in the CCAA. 
  • CSUSM has registered 334 hits this season, ranking fourth in the CCAA. 
  • Two Cougars are ranked in the top 10 in the CCAA in batting average – Jillian Albayati is in third (.421), followed by Paige Donnelly in eighth (.374).
  • Albayati ranks ninth in the nation with 2.79 assists per game. 
  • Coyle is ranked 11th in Division II with fourth saves while Jayline Sloss has two and is ranked 50th. 
  • Donnelly's 29 RBIs rank fifth in the CCAA. 
  • Jayline Sloss took sole possession of second place in the CCAA with 28 strikeouts looking.
  • Madison Waymire ranks fourth in the conference with 32 runs. 
  • With her home run in the Chico State series, Waymire moved up to fifth in the CCAA with five home runs. 
  • Three Cougars are in the top 10 in on-base percentage in the CCAA with Albayati in fourth (.466), Coyle in sixth (.452) and Donnelly in 10th (.444).

COUGARS VS. THE COYOTES

  • With a bye from CCAA play last weekend, CSUSB dropped both ends of its doubleheader at Azusa Pacific, 4-3 and 3-1 in non-conference play. 
  • The Coyotes won their series at Chico State two weeks ago, splitting Friday's doubleheader with a 10-9 win before falling 2-1. On Saturday, CSUSB recorded a twinbill sweep with scores of 2-0 and 11-2 (5 inn.). 
  • Earlier in the season, CSUSB dropped its series (1-3) to Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay while splitting its series (2-2) with then-No. 14 Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State. The Coyotes have won one series (3-1) so far this season, their series opener against then-No. 18 Cal State Dominguez Hills. 
  • CSUSB ranks second in the CCAA in home runs (19), home runs per game (0.48), team strikeouts per seven innings (4.55) and sacrifice bunts (36). 
  • The Coyote pitching staff is boasting the seventh-best ERA (2.99) in the CCAA while CSUSB is sixth in the conference with a .289 batting average.
  • Tereise Tosi is leading the league in batting average (.463), hits (63), home runs (10) and slugging percentage (.787). 
  • Samantha Vargas has the ninth-best ERA in the CCAA at 2.43. 
  • The Coyotes are tied for fifth in the CCAA standings, one game back from fourth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills and one-game head of seventh-place Cal Poly Humboldt. 
  • CSUSM is 10-27 in the all-time series against CSUSB and is 1-13 when playing in San Marcos. 
  • In 2024, the Cougars won their series against the Coyotes in San Bernardino, dropping game one 6-3 before taking the next three by scores of 14-6 (6 inn.), 5-3 and 10-2 (6 inn.). 
  • The Coyotes were picked to finish fourth in the 2025 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.

2025 OUTLOOK

  • CSUSM was picked to finish first in the 2025 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll. 
  • The Cougars' roster of 26 consists of 17 returners, one transfer and eight freshman. 
  • Athletically, the Cougars are made up of four redshirt seniors, six seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and eight freshman. 
  • The Cougars' 53-game schedule includes 28 home contests and 25 road games.


THE ROBINSON FILE

  • Head Coach A.J. Robinson was promoted to the top spot on July 31, 2024. 
  • As the program's assistant coach from 2022-24, Robinson helped guide CSUSM to three NCAA Division II West Regional appearances, an NCAA National Championship appearance, a West Regional Championship, a CCAA Regular-Season Championship and a CCAA Tournament Championship.
  • For the 2021 season, Robinson was a volunteer assistant coach at San Diego State and helped the Aztecs to an overall record of 28-16.
  • Robinson's first stint at CSUSM was as a volunteer assistant coach from 2018-20 where he was named CSUSM Athletics' Volunteer Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020.
  • Robinson was the founder and president of The Factory Softball Club in San Diego until 2024. In 2018 and 2019, he and his coaching staff earned West Region Travel Ball Coaching Staff of the Year honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
