CSUSM Ends Season with Loss at No. 20 Chico State

CHICO, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (6-22, 6-16 CCAA) closed out its 2024-25 season with an 87-60 loss to No. 20 Chico State (23-5, 19-3 CCAA) on Saturday at Acker Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a 3-pointer by Micah Boone gave CSUSM a 14-11 lead with 13:10 to go, Chico went on a 14-0 run and took a 25-14 lead on a Jojo Murphy 3-pointer with 9:58 to go in the period.
  • After the Wildcats took their largest lead of the half at 35-22 on a Murphy layup, Keavie Love made the period's final basket on a jumper to cut the Cougars' deficit to 35-24 going into halftime.
  • CSUSM shot 31.3% (10-of-32) from the field in the first half while Chico came in at 37.5% (12-of-32).
  • The Wildcats went up 46-26 on a Trae Taylor free throw with 16:19 remaining.
  • Chico built a 30-point lead at 72-42, its largest of the contest, as Isaiah Kerr made a layup with 9:06 to play.
  • CSUSM shot 38.5% (10-of-26) in the second period while Chico clocked in at 64.3% (18-of-28).
  • The Cougars were outscored 52-36 in the second half.

 
FAST BREAKS

  • CSUSM finished the game shooting 34.5% (20-of-58) while Chico went 50% (30-of-60).
  • The Cougars had more blocks at 3-1, but the Wildcats had the edge in rebounds (34-31), assists (15-6) and steals (6-3) while committing fewer turnovers (6-14).
  • Chico scored 23 points off CSUSM's 14 turnovers and tallied 21 fastbreak points to the Cougars' 12.
  • Both sides scored 11 second-chance points.
  • Chico held the lead for 32:45 while CSUSM was on top for 5:40.
