Eighth-Inning Rally Puts CSUSM Over LA, 7-6

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – An eighth-inning rally gave the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (7-6, 3-5 CCAA) a 7-6 win and a series split in the final game against Cal State LA (5-9, 2-2 CCAA) on Sunday at ELAC Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A two-out RBI single to center by Javy Espinoza gave the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • LA took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a Malik Clayton RBI groundout to second.
  • With two on and one out in the top of the sixth, CSUSM made it a 2-1 game on a Cameron Mahaffy RBI single.
  • The Golden Eagles went up 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run double by Ben Lee.
  • The Cougars rallied for six runs in the top of the eighth with a two-run homer by Hayden Tregidga, an RBI single from Marco Pirruccello, a two-run double by Tyler Weaver and an RBI single by Fisher Pyatt to take a 7-4 lead.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, LA tried to put something together. With two on and two outs, a CSUSM fielding error allowed two runs to score and cut the Golden Eagles' deficit to 7-6. The Cougars avoided further harm as a flyout to center ended the game.

 
QUICK HITS

  • Cougar reliever Trevor Eby (1-0) earned the win after striking out one in a third of an inning while allowing nothing.
  • Nolan Long picked up his second save of the year after striking out one as two unearned runs scored on two hits in 2.0 innings.
  • Golden Eagle reliever Alejandro Morales (1-2) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on a hit and a walk in a third of an inning.
  • Tregidga tallied his team-leading fifth homer of the season while also earning his team-best seventh multi-hit game and sixth multi-RBI game.
  • This was the first series split between CSUSM and LA since 2022 and the second overall.
  • The Cougars scored seven runs in three of this weekend's four games.

CSUSM will return to non-conference action next weekend as it hosts No. 3 Tampa in a four-game series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m. at CSUSM Baseball Field.
