Cougars Split Doubleheader with Golden Eagles
MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (6-6, 2-5 CCAA) split its doubleheader against Cal State LA (5-8, 2-1 CCAA), winning the first game 7-0 before falling 6-0 in the second game on Saturday at ELAC Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUSM got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI double to left center by Cameron Mahaffy and a bases-loaded RBI groundout by Mateo Lake.
- A two-run double to left center by Garrett Teunissen put the Cougars up 4-0 in the top of the fourth.
- Mateo Lake hit a two-run blast to right in the top of the fifth to give CSUSM a 6-0 lead on his second homer of the year.
- The Cougars tacked on one more in the top of the eighth as Phoenix Sommay scored on a Golden Eagle error to make it 7-0.
QUICK HITS
- CSUSM starter Jordan Townley (1-1) earned the win after throwing a season-high 7.0 scoreless innings and striking out a season-best seven while allowing just five hits and a walk on 114 pitches.
- LA starter AJ Moreno (0-2) took the loss after giving up six earned runs on eight hits, three walks and two hit-by-pitches in 5.0 innings.
- Teunissen increased his reached-base streak to 14 games dating back to last season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After two scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles rallied with a five-run inning in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Ben Lee, a two-run single by Malik Clayton and a RBI single by Carson Panarisi.
- A sacrifice fly by Cesar Chavez put LA up 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

- Golden Eagle starter Brandon Gutierrez (1-1) threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout as he allowed just three walks and a hit while striking out five.
- Cougar starter Zach Coleman (1-2) took the loss after allowing six earned runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while striking out three in 4.0 innings.
- This was CSUSM's second time ever to be shut out by LA with the first occurrence happening on Feb. 28, 2016.
- The Cougars were last one-hit by Biola on Feb. 4, 2023, in what was also a 6-0 decision.
