- Apr 146:00 PMReid Lecture 2026Organization: Math Department Annual event hosted by Mathematics Department open to local and campus communities, including high school and college students from other campuses and interested community members. The Reid Lecture was established in 2015 and has continued with support from Founding Library Dean Emerita Marion Reid and Founding Math Faculty Member K. Brooks Reid. Juggling Counts Mathematics is a language which can help us describe and explore patterns. One source of patterns that mathematicians have been exploring comes from juggling (the tossing of objects, usually balls or clubs). We will look at multiple ways to describe juggling patterns that allow us to find new juggling patterns, and to count how many possible patterns exist. We can compare answers to various problems to give a combinatorial proof of Worpitzky’s identity. We will also look at a few juggling-based problems that mathematics has not yet succeeded in answering. Steve Butler is an award-winning teacher who has given talks at numerous venues ranging from the AMS-MAA address at Mathfest 2021 to the Iowa State Fair and almost everything in between. Steve’s mathematics was heavily influenced by his mentors at UC San Diego, Fan Chung and Ron Graham. His mathematical research includes spectral graph theory, shuffling, juggling, origami, tiling, Apollonian circle packings, parking functions, and more. In 2015, he became the 512th mathematician to have an Erdos number of 1. Steve Butler has been at Iowa State University since 2011 where he is a Morrill Professor and the Barbara J Janson Professor of Mathematics. https://www.csusm.edu/math/news_events/the-reid-lecture-series.html

- Apr 174:00 PMBeyond the Sentence: How Law and Education Shape Second ChancesOrganization: Project Rebound In recognition of Fair Chance Month, Project Rebound at California State University San Marcos will host Beyond the Sentence: How Law and Education Shape Second Chances, a panel discussion exploring the realities of reentry, the collateral consequences of conviction, and the role that law and education play in expanding—or restricting—opportunity. Celebrated annually in April, Fair Chance Month focuses on removing barriers for individuals with criminal records to support successful reintegration into society. It raises awareness about the lasting impact of conviction records and promotes reforms such as “Clean Slate” laws designed to seal records and expand access to employment, housing, and professional licensing Fair Chance Month 2026 Panel 2 1 . This timely conversation will feature voices with lived experience of incarceration, legal professionals, and leaders working in the reentry and criminal justice reform communities, including: Dr. James M. Binnall, Professor & Executive Director, Project Rebound, CSU Long Beach Jason Bell, Executive Director, Project Rebound, San Francisco State University & Director of Programs, CSU Project Rebound Consortium Colleen Murphy, President & Co-Founder, System Impacted Law Student Association Lauren Tyler, Vice President & Co-Founder, System Impacted Law Student Association Fair Chance Month 2026 Panel 2 1 Panelists will explore the structural challenges individuals face after incarceration, including employment barriers that range from entry-level retail positions to licensed professions such as attorneys and licensed clinical social workers. The discussion will examine how governing bodies—including the State Bar, the Board of Behavioral Sciences, and the Department of Social Services—can create additional hurdles for individuals seeking professional licensure, even after completing their sentences and pursuing higher education. By centering both lived experience and professional expertise, this event aims to foster dialogue about equity, public policy, and the transformative power of education. The panel will highlight the critical work being done across California to create more inclusive pathways into higher education and professional careers, while challenging systems that continue to impose lifelong consequences. All students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to attend and engage in this important Fair Chance Month conversation.
