On the Breaking Wave of Action Sports Research

For decades, the sport of surfing has been largely driven through experiential knowledge, gut feelings and anecdotal evidence. But two Cal State San Marcos kinesiology researchers, Drs. Sean Newcomer and Jeff Nessler, are offering hard data on surfing and other action sports. The two lifelong surfers recently teamed up to delve into the science of surfing.

Diabetes Research Helps the Body Heal
Analyzing the genes and proteins involved in tissue repair, CSUSM's Dr. Julie Jameson and her team are exploring new biomedical research to improve wound healing treatments for type 2 diabetics and patients with compromised immune systems.Currently, because type 2 diabetes suppresses the body's immune response, which impedes wound healing, patients are susceptible to infection and other devastating health complications, such as limb amputation.Dr. Jameson's research has already led to the identification of a family of genes that facilitates tissue repair. Working with physicians at Scripps Clinic, she is developing a translational study that could significantly improve treatment options for patients by restoring normal immune function.
