- No Overnight Parking in PS1 From Dec. 19-Jan. 13Fall semester parking permits will be expiring Jan. 10. Spring 2023 permits will be available to purchase online starting Jan. 2. Parking Structure 1 (PS1) and Parking Structure 2 (PS2) will be undergoing maintenance during the winter break. There will be no overnight parking in PS1 from Dec. 19–Jan. 13. Vehicles remaining in the structure during these dates will be ticketed and/or towed. Overnight parking is available in lots B, C, F, K, N and O.

- Call for Research Participants for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction StudyWe are recruiting healthy adults, ages 18 to 50 , to be part of a study on the effects that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery has on muscle mass and balance. We are recruiting participants who have had ACL surgery or injury on one leg. Participation will take approximately 40 minutes. If you volunteer, you will have a measure of body composition completed and will then stand on each leg to allow us to measure balance and stability. The study is being conducted in Room 240 of University Hall on campus. Previous ACL surgery on both of your legs may exclude you from participating. The Murph Workout honors the life of Lt. Michael Murphy, the first service member to receive the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan. The workout consists of a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and another 1-mile run. - Resources and Events for Upcoming Nov. 8 ElectionOn Tuesday, Nov. 8, California registered voters will vote on statewide propositions, statewide candidates, U.S. representatives, Supreme Court justices, as well as local candidates and local measures. You can drop off your ballot on campus at the ballot dropbox located in Campus Way Circle in front of the University Student Union entrance. Voter Education Civic Action Hub: Learn how to “get out the vote.” Complete at least three actions to be an informed voter and learn how to be an active participant in our democracy. - Closure of Lot N for Report to the CommunityGeneral spaces in Parking Lot N will be closed on Sept. 29 for Report to the Community. All vehicles parked in Lot N on Sept. 28 will need to relocate to Lot K, Lot O or levels 1-5 of Parking Structure 1 by 7 p.m. No overnight parking is allowed on the sixth level of PS1. - Seeking Participants for Cannabis and Exercise Research StudyResearchers at Cal State San Marcos are seeking active men and women for a study on cannabis and exercise. The study is examining the impact of exercise on post-meal responses in cannabis users and non-users. - New Timeline for Scheduling Campus EventsEvent and Conference Services will be implementing a new scheduling timeline for all events effective immediately. The following annual deadlines are in place to ensure that campus event reservations are equitable for the campus community and entered into 25Live by a specific deadline before each semester. - Mandatory Drought RestrictionsCalifornia is in the third year of a statewide drought, and Vallecitos Water District recently issued a Level 2 Drought Alert. Current irrigation on campus meets the requirements of this alert. In further support of water conservation, CSUSM also has implemented many conservation measures to increase our water efficiency, including low-flow faucets, low-flow toilets and waterless urinals in all buildings, computerized irrigation controllers, and drought-tolerant plants around campus. While the campus is doing everything we can to conserve water, we strongly encourage the campus community to make every attempt to also conserve water; not only while on campus but also at home. Here are some tips to conserve water at home: Outdoors Repair irrigation line leaks and broken sprinkler heads. Adjust sprinklers to prevent overspray and runoff. Don’t overwater. Use a hose nozzle that shuts off when you release the handle. Water between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to reduce evaporation and interference from wind. Apply a 3-inch layer of mulch over planting areas, keeping the mulch 6 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to avoid mildew. Install drip irrigation systems for trees, shrubs and flowers to get water to plant roots more efficiently. Upgrade to a “smart” irrigation controller that automatically adjusts watering times for hotter weather and stops watering when it rains. Rebates may even be available for this type of product depending on your location. Replace your lawn with native or Mediterranean plants, trees, shrubs or ground cover. These plantings provide greenery for much of the year and demand less water. Indoors Turn off the faucet while brushing teeth, shaving or scrubbing dishes. Trim a minute or two off your shower and collect water in a bucket for plants while the water is warming up. Fill the bathtub halfway for bathing. Fix leaky toilets and faucets. Install aerators with flow restrictors on kitchen and bathroom faucets. Wash only full loads of laundry. Run the dishwasher only when full. Program dishwashers to skip the pre-rinse and extra-rinse cycles. Fill your sink or basin when washing and rinsing dishes. When cooking, peel and clean vegetables in a large bowl of water instead of under running water. Place food waste in the compost instead of the garbage disposal. - CSUSM Professor to Discuss 'First Chinese Family' of San DiegoCal State San Marcos literature and writing studies professor Susie Lan Cassel will be one of the presenters for a virtual discussion titled “Introducing the Ah Quin Family: The First Chinese Family in San Diego's Early Chinatown” on May 10 at noon. You can register here to receive a Zoom link. Ah Quin was the informal mayor of San Diego's early Chinatown, but he was also a prolific writer who left behind 11 volumes of a diary that spans from 1877 to 1902, providing a personal account of many of the landmark experiences of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. In 1881, he married Ah Sue, and they raised a family of 12 children in San Diego. This talk will introduce you to the Ah Quin family and what it was like for them to live in San Diego during the age of Chinese exclusion. It also will discuss his life as a bachelor laborer in San Francisco, some of the secrets contained within his diary and his present-day legacy.
