Panel to Discuss Resources for Undocumented Students

Cal State San Marcos' Dreamer Resource Office and sociology professor Marisol Clark-Ibanez will host an event to discuss resources for undocumented students on Oct. 14 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the McMahan House.

The event will feature keynote speaker and CSUSM alumna Carolina Valdivia, a UC Irvine professor who also serves as the investigator of the UndocuResearch project.

Valdivia will share her research from 106 in-depth interviews with students nationwide. The event also will spotlight local institutional and community resources that seek to help address undocumented students’ needs.

The event is in honor of Undocumented Student Action Week, from Oct. 14-18, which is dedicated to raising awareness about the experiences of undocumented college students.

The event will feature findings from the UndocuBasic Needs Project, which examines the experiences of undocumented college students and those from mixed-status families. The discussion will include contributions from panelists Lissa Lim, Alondra Lopez and Gladys Guzman.

Lim works as the orientation and didactic training coordinator in Student Health & Counseling Services. She is a bilingual counselor who specializes in Latinx mental health, sexual trauma, immigrant communities and first-generation college students.

Lim also leads Flutter, a CSUSM support group for undocumented and mixed-status students. The group creates a safe and confidential space to give and receive support around the experiences of being undocumented or mixed status.

Lopez manages the ASI Cougar Pantry. She is passionate about health equity and student well-being. Since joining ASI in 2016, Lopez has ensured that students have access to food and support services, fostering a welcoming environment for their academic and personal success.

Guzman works as a resource coordinator for UURISE, a North County-based nonprofit that provides low-cost and free immigration-related legal and support services.
