CSUSM Concludes Last Regular-Season Road Trip This Week

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (11-11, 9-5 CCAA) will wrap up its final road trip of the regular season this week, traveling to Cal State LA (13-9, 11-3 CCAA) on Friday at 5 p.m. before a stop at Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-11, 5-9 CCAA) on Saturday at 3 p.m. 


LAST WEEK

  • The Cougars opened their four-match road trip with a pair of victories last weekend. 
  • CSUSM collected a sweep (25-18, 25-22, 25-21) at Stanislaus State on Friday night to complete its first series sweep of the season. 
  • The next day, the Cougars recorded its second series sweep with a four-set victory at Chico State by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-27 and 25-15. 


BY THE NUMBERS

  • CSUSM is on a five-match win streak, a program best during the NCAA Division II era (2015-present). The Cougars have accomplished this feat two other times – Sept. 1-15, 2018 and Sept. 5-7, 2019. 
  • CSUSM is in a tie for fifth place alongside Sonoma State in the CCAA standings, one game back from Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State who are tied for third. The Cougars hold a two-match lead over seventh-place Cal State East Bay. 
  • The Cougars' nine conference wins are the second most in a season in program history, a feat they have achieved on three other occasions. CSUSM's program record for CCAA wins in a season is 11. 
  • With 1,254 digs, the Cougars remain third in the conference.
  • Tori Goff is ranked third in the CCAA with 755 assists and 8.88 assists per set. 
  • Mia Christensen is sixth in the CCAA with 297 total digs and 3.67 digs per set. 
  • Head Coach Andrea Leonard reached a career milestone – her 200th CSUSM win – against Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 16. 
  • Leonard is one win away from collecting her 300th career victory as a collegiate head coach.

FRIDAY AT RV CAL STATE LA

  • The Golden Eagles are second in the CCAA standings with an 11-3 record, one game behind conference-leader Cal State San Bernardino (12-2).  
  • CSULA is 7-0 when playing at home this season. 
  • The Golden Eagles are on a two-match losing streak after falling on the road last weekend to San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino, both in four sets. 
  • On Sept. 23, CSUSM dropped three straight sets to Cal State LA by scores of 18-25, 19-25 and 18-25. 
  • CSULA has a 12-3 lead in the all-time series against CSUSM and are 6-2 when playing at home. 
  • CSUSM last defeated the Golden Eagles in a upset victory in four sets on Nov. 2, 2018 when they were ranked No. 12 in the nation. 
  • The Golden Eagles are leading the CCAA in aces per set (1.91) and total aces (157) while ranking last in digs per set (12.24) and total digs (1,004). 
  • Emily Elliott has the 20th-best kills per set average at 4.13 while leading the CCAA. 
  • Iane Henke is the CCAA leader with 0.52 aces per set, ranking 44th in the nation. 
  • CSULA was selected to repeat as regular-season champions in the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll.

SATURDAY AT CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS

  • The Toros will face Pomona on Friday before going up against the Cougars on Saturday.
  • CSUDH has lost nine of its last 11 matches including being swept at San Francisco State and falling in four sets at Cal State San Bernardino last weekend. 
  • The Toros are 4-3 at home this season. 
  • Earlier this season, CSUSM fell in five sets to the Toros in The Sports Center by scores of 28-26, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25 and 15-17. 
  • CSUSM holds a 9-6 all-time record over the Toros and is 3-4 when playing in the Torodome.  
  • The Toros rank last in the CCAA with a .154 hitting percentage and are 11th in assists per set (10.09) and kills per set (10.93). 
  • CSUDH is the CCAA leader in blocks per set (2.34), ranking 18th in the nation. 
  • Nina Robles ranks second in the CCAA in digs per set (4.59) and total digs (349).

    • The Cougars return five starters from the 2022 season - Trinity Barr (OH), Sofia Hedqvist (OH), Jessica Thomas (OH), Mia Christensen (DS/L) and Jackie Phillips (DS/L)
    • Seven will be donning Cougar Blue for the first time on Friday with four being true freshmen and three junior college transfers. 
    • The Cougars finished their 2022 campaign with an 8-17 overall record and were 7-11 in CCAA play – eighth in the CCAA standings. 
    • As a team in the CCAA statistics, CSUSM concluded 2022 ranked seventh in blocks per set (1.87). 
    • In the 2023 CCAA Volleyball Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cougars were picked to finish ninth.

    THE LEONARD FILE

    • Head coach Andrea Leonard enters her 13th season in charge of the Cougar volleyball team, a program she has built from the ground up since arriving on campus in 2010.
    • Leonard has a 207-157 (.569) record as CSUSM's head coach.
    • In 17 seasons as a collegiate head volleyball coach, Leonard holds a 299-283 (.514) career record.
    • Leonard was CSUSM's first-ever CCAA Coach of the Year after guiding the Cougars to a third-place finish in the overall standings during the 2017 season.
