Hot Start Falls Short Against No. 19 CSUSB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (2-7, 0-2 CCAA) dropped a four-set match (25-23, 16-25, 18-25, 15-25) to No. 19 Cal State San Bernardino (5-4, 1-1 CCAA) on Saturday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars came out ready to play in the first set that featured 12 tie scores and four lead changes. Tied 23-all, CSUSM clinched the opening set with a Kranz kill and a CSUSB attack error.
  • Once again, the teams traded leads until the 8-6 mark when the Coyotes went on a 9-1 run and later cruised to a 25-16 win to even the match at 1-1.
  • The Coyotes dominated the third set, tallying a .312 attack percentage with Savannah Hoffman tallying eight kills in the set. CSUSB went up 2-1 after recording a 25-18 win.
  • The Cougars got out fast in the fourth set, taking a 4-1 lead, capped by a Kranz and Gurrola block. The Coyotes charged back to take the set at 25-15.
     

QUICK HITS

  • The last time CSUSM took a set from the Coyotes was in 2019 at The Sports Center.
  • This is the fourth time the Cougars have opened the match with a set victory against CSUSB.
  • CSUSB's Ashley Robinson tallied 18 kills, four aces and 10 digs in the contest.

The Cougars will make the short trip north to Cal State LA next Friday for their first CCAA road match of the year. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
