CSUSM Falls on Senior Day

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In its regular-season finale, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (12-14, 10-8 CCAA) fell in five sets to visiting Cal State East Bay (13-12, 9-9 CCAA) on Senior Day in The Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Prior to today's match, CSUSM honored its four seniors: Trinity Barr, Mia Christensen, Sofia Hedqvist and Mackenzie Jennings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening set featured 12 ties but only two lead changes with CSUSM coming out on top with a 25-22 victory.
  • The second set was drastically different with 19 tie scores and 10 lead changes. After three set points, CSUSM waved off an East Bay set point before capturing the set at 29-27 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. CSUSM tallied a match-high 19 kills and four aces in the set.
  • The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the third set as CSUSM played catchup the entire set. The Cougars closed the gap to 21-18 on a solo block by Hedqvist. East Bay took the set at 25-20.
  • The fourth set was all Pioneers as they led wire-to-wire behind a .412 attack percentage and forced a fifth set with a 25-15 win.
  • CSUSM went up 12-10 on a Gurrola kill, but the Pioneers charged back with a 5-1 run to take the set (15-13) and match.

 
QUICK HITS

  • This is only the second time in the all-time series between the Cougars and Pioneers that the match went to five sets. In their first meeting, the Cougars came out on top in a five-set thriller in 2015.
  • The season series concluded in a split as CSUSM won in four sets in Hayward on Sept. 15.
  • For the fifth consecutive match, the Cougars outblocked their opponents with a 9-6 advantage against CSUEB on Saturday.
  • Hedqvist matched her second-highest kill count with 19.
  • Isabelle Bakken tallied a season-best seven digs and three aces.
                            

UP NEXT
The Cougars will be making their fifth CCAA Tournament appearance in six years next week. CSUSM will be the sixth seed and will face third seed San Francisco State at 3 p.m. in the University Gym on the campus of Cal State LA.
