Cougars Fall in CCAA Tournament Quarterfinals to SF State

LOS ANGELES – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (12-15) saw its season come to an end on Thursday night after falling in three sets to San Francisco State (18-9) in the CCAA Tournament Quarterfinals at University Gym on the campus of Cal State LA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A solo block by Hedqvist gave CSUSM its first lead of the match at 4-3. Following a Mackenzie Jennings kill to make it 9-9, the Cougars saw the Gators slowly pull away. SF State won set one 25-17 behind a .464 clip.  
  • The second set had a bit of déjà vu with SF State once again collecting the win at 25-18 with a .345 clip.
  • The Cougars came out on fire in the third set with a quick 4-0 lead that consisted of two aces, a block and a Bakken kill. Up 6-1, CSUSM saw its lead dwindle away as the Gators took a 10-8 lead. Down 21-16, the Cougars came roaring back to cut the SF State lead to just a point at 23-22 on a block by Barr and Bakken. The Gators closed out the set at 25-23 to claim the match and move on to the CCAA Tournament Semifinals.

 
QUICK HITS

  • This is CSUSM's second consecutive time facing the Gators in the first round of the CCAA Tournament. The Cougars fell in four sets to SF State in 2021 on the campus of Cal State San Bernardino.
  • The Cougars have made five of the last six CCAA Tournaments since becoming eligible in 2017.
  • CSUSM outblocked the Gators 6-4 in the match.
  • SF State finished with a .402 attack percentage to the Cougars' .194.
  • Prior to the game, Mia Christensen was awarded the CCAA Elite 13 Award.
