CSUSM's Charge Falls Short at RV CSULA

LOS ANGELES – Playing bonus volleyball in three of the sets, the Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (11-12, 9-6 CCAA) fell in four sets to RV Cal State LA (14-9, 12-3 CCAA) on Friday night in CSULA Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the opening set before the Golden Eagles responded with a 9-1 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Cougars rallied back but fell just short, dropping the first set 26-24. CSUSM finished with a .308 clip (10k-2e-26ta) to CSULA's .278 (16k-6e-36ta).
  • Down 22-24 in the second set, CSUSM scored four unanswered points capped by back-to-back aces by Jackie Phillips to even the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 win.
  • The third set had the Golden Eagles going up 11-6, but once again CSUSM came charging back to even the set at 22-all on a Barr kill. After waving off three set points, CSUSM dropped the third set 28-26 as CSULA took a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • At 12-all, CSULA took the lead with a kill by Emily Elliott and never relinquished it, recording a 25-19 fourth-set win to clinch the match.

QUICK HITS

  • The Cougars saw their five-match win streak come to an end. This was the third time CSUSM has achieved the streak in the NCAA Division II era (2015-present).
  • CSUSM outblocked the Golden Eagles, 9-7.
  • Bakken's eight block assists were a season high.
  • The Cougars tallied eight aces with seven missed serves while CSULA registered 12 aces and 16 missed serves.
