CSUSM Completes Season Series Sweep Over Humboldt

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (5-15, 3-10 CCAA) completed its first CCAA season series sweep with a four-set victory (25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-20) over visiting Cal Poly Humboldt (7-14, 3-10 CCAA) on Friday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM came out strong, never trailing in the first set to capture a 25-21 opening-set victory behind a .310 hitting percentage (15k, 2e, 42ta).
  • In the second set, the Cougars built on to their success with a .435 clip to snag a 25-16 win to go up 2-0 in the match.
  • CSUSM held the lead in the third set until four unanswered points by the Lumberjacks put them up 19-17. The Cougars battled back to make it 20-19 Humboldt before a 5-2 run gave the Jacks the win at 25-21 to force a fourth set.
  • The Cougars went up 21-14 on an ace by McCasland in the fourth set. Humboldt crawled back in the set to make it 22-17 before the Cougars clinched the match with a kill by Kranz to give CSUSM a 25-20 win.

QUICK HITS

  • The Cougars won the battle of blocks at 8-2.
  • CSUSM's .304 hitting percentage was its second highest of the season.
  • Humboldt's Awelina Fakalata led all hitters with 15 kills.
  • Bakken's .522 clip was her best of the season and her zero-kills performance was her first at CSUSM with more than 20 attempts.
  • CSUSM extends its win streak over Humboldt to 10 games and is now 10-2 in the all-time series.
  • Earlier this season, the Cougars defeated the Lumberjacks in four sets (25-23, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22) in Arcata.
