CSUSM Ends Weekend with 3-2 Victory at Cal Poly Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. – The (RV) Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (4-2-3, 1-1-0 CCAA) concluded the opening weekend of CCAA play with a 3-2 win at Cal Poly Humboldt (3-5-1, 0-2-0 CCAA) on Sunday at College Creek Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Humboldt got the scoring started in the just second minute of action. Off a corner kick into the box by Emilie Wallin, Mari Ige put a shot into the left side of the goal to give the Lumberjacks an early 1-0 lead.
  • Off a corner kick from the left side by Natalia Huntington, Natalie Paulson headed the ball over the keeper and into the left side of the goal from six yards out to knot the game at 1-1 in the 26th minute.
  • Tied 1-1 after 45 minutes, CSUSM had the advantage in shots (8-1), shots on goal (5-1) and corner kicks (5-1) as Huntington led the half with three shots and two shots on goal.
  • Just over three minutes into the start of the second half, Nani Kia'aina took possession of the ball near midfield after a Cougar throw-in. She then passed the ball downfield to Huntington, who went one-on-one with a Humboldt defender before putting a low shot into the right side of goal from the top of the box, giving CSUSM a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute.
  • Just a few moments later in the 55th minute, Humboldt's Camryn Patten made a long pass from deep in Lumberjack territory over the middle of the field where Heidie Munoz took possession just outside of the box. Munoz went one-on-one with a CSUSM defender before putting a low roller past the Cougar keeper and into the bottom left corner of the goal to tie the match at 2-2.
  • On a free kick near midfield by Charlotte Leite in the 79th minute, the long ball went off the keeper's hands before it was headed into the right side of the net by Danielle Paulson to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead.

 
QUICK KICKS

  • CSUSM ended the game with a big edge in shots (14-3), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (9-5) despite controlling the ball for 47% of the match. Of CSUSM's possessions, 75% came in Humboldt territory.
  • Danielle Paulson's goal was her third of the year, while goals by Natalie Paulson and Huntington were their first.
  • Huntington's assist was her second of the season while Kia'aina and Leite each recorded their first.
  • Huntington led the game in shots (4) and shots on goal (3).
  • This was CSUSM's first win over Humboldt in Arcata since 2017 and was the Cougars' second consecutive victory against the Lumberjacks.
  • The Cougars' three goals were the most scored by either team in the all-time series.
  • CSUSM is now 4-1-4 in the all-time series against Humboldt and is 2-0-2 when playing the Lumberjacks in Arcata.
