Cougars See Historic Run Come to Close in Overtime at NCAA Tournament

SAN DIEGO – The magical run of the fifth-seeded Cal State San Marcos women's soccer team (11-3-6) came to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as it fell 1-0 in overtime to fourth-seeded No. 24 Concordia University Irvine (13-2-2) at host Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars and Golden Eagles played a scoreless first half with CUI leading the way in shots at 6-2 while putting up the only two shots on goal of the period. Both teams took two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
  • CSUSM and CUI played another scoreless 45 minutes with each side putting up seven shots. The Cougars put up their lone two shots on goal for the game in the second half while the Golden Eagles added three.
  • After a scoreless first overtime period, CUI finally broke the draw in the 103rd minute. After Havican put a ball down the right side, Walkington took a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box into the bottom left corner of the goal past the charging Cougar keeper to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • CSUSM was unable to get a shot off in the second overtime period and saw its historical season come to a close.

 
QUICK KICKS

  • This was CSUSM's first-ever NCAA Tournament game.
  • The Cougars' loss snapped a program-record 14-game unbeaten streak dating back to Sept. 23.
  • Nani Kia'aina and Natalia Huntington led CSUSM with three shots each.
  • Allison Marcure's five saves were her second most of the season.
  • CUI outshot CSUSM by a 17-10 margin and put six shots on goal to the Cougars' two. CUI's 17 shots were the most by a CSUSM opponent this season.
  • The Golden Eagles had one more corner kick than the Cougars at 5-4.
  • CSUSM controlled the ball for 40% of the match but 59% of its possessions occurred in CUI territory.
  • The Cougars had six offside calls against them while the Golden Eagles had none.
