SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 17 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will travel to compete in the Poppy Hills Patriot Invitational hosted by Dallas Baptist on March 18-19 at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Cougars won their fifth tournament of the 2023-24 season last week, capturing the team title at their own tournament, the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational.
- Madison Murr won her fourth tournament of the season, leading each round after carding an opening round of 66.
- Murrr ranks No. 3 in the country behind top-ranked Mary Kelly Mulcahy from the University of Findlay and No. 2 Tella Jelinek of Flagler.
GOLFER OF THE WEEK
- Madison Murr picked up her third CCAA Golfer of the Week honor this season and the sixth of her career.
- Murr carded a 1-under 215 (66-78-71) at the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational, winning the tournament by five strokes.
- CSUSM has won four of the eight awards this season with Murr earning the award Oct. 4, Oct. 30 and March 13 while Laurn Hickam was named Co-Golfer of the Week on Oct. 18.

POPPY HILLS PATRIOT INVITATIONAL
- This is the Cougars' third consecutive season competing in the Poppy Hills Patriot Invitational.
- The Cougars took fourth at the Patriot Invite last season, finishing with a 44-over 896 (293-296-307), 10 strokes behind first-place NCAA Division I Dartmouth.
- In 2022, Dallas Baptist won the inaugural tournament with an 11-over 863.
- Murr was CSUSM's top finisher last season, tying for third with a 4-over 217 (71-71-75).
- The field includes three nationally-ranked teams - No. 1 Dallas Baptist, No. 16 Midwestern and No. 17 CSUSM in addition to Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay who are both receiving votes.
COUGAR OUTLOOK
- This year's squad will feature three new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Chloe Rahn and Maddie Reed in addition to midseason transfer Hannah Anderson
- The Cougars won their fourth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2023, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by six strokes.
- After a third-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its second appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing ninth in stroke play.
THE HUTTON FILE
- Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
- In his 13 years as the Cougar men's coach and nine years as the Cougar women's coach, Hutton has led CSUSM to 59 tournament victories (35 women/24 men).
- The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
- The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022.
- In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside.
- Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022 and 2023.
- In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
