No. 6 CSUSM to Conclude Regular Season at West Texas Desert Invite

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 6 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will conclude its 2024-25 regular season at the West Texas Desert Invitational on March 31-April 1 at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon in Tuscon, Arizona. 

LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM placed third with a 41-over 893 behind host and No. 1 Dallas Baptist (885, +33) and NCAA Division I Harvard at the Patriot Invitational on March 18 at Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel. 
  • Kiara Hernandez was CSUSM's top golfer with a share of sixth place after carding an 8-over 221. 
  • Hernandez became the fourth different Cougar to snag the CCAA Golfer of the Week honor during this 2024-25 season. 


GOLFER OF THE WEEK

  • Kiara Hernandez was named CCAA Golfer of the Week. 
  • This was Hernandez's first career CCAA Golfer of the Week award.
  • CSUSM has been represented in six of the nine times the CCAA Golfer of the Week honor has been given out this season.

    WEST TEXAS A&M DESERT INVITATIONAL 

    • The Cougars will make their second consecutive appearance at the West Texas A&M Desert Invitational after a four-year hiatus. 
    • CSUSM placed eighth in last year's tournament with a 49-over 625. Madison Murr shared second place after carding an even-par 144. 
    • CSUSM was scheduled to compete in the tournament in 2020, but it was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. 
    • The Cougars shared first place with Grand Canyon in 2019 after carding a 21-over 597. 
    • Claire Hogle was CSUSM's top golfer after taking second place with a 1-over 145.   


    COUGAR OUTLOOK

    • For the second consecutive year, the squad added two new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Faith Hamstreet and Abby Sickles
    • The Cougars won their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2024, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by 27 strokes. 
    • Regan Barton become CSUSM's fourth CCAA Champion, recording a 2-under 214 at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. 
    • After a fifth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its third appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing 12th in stroke play. 


    THE HUTTON FILE

    • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
    • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times – six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
    • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
    • CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
    • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
    • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
    • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
