No. 6 CSUSM Ready to Compete in The Patriot Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 6 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will travel to Carmel to compete in The Patriot Invitational hosted by Dallas Baptist on March 17-18 at Quail Lodge Golf Course . 


LAST TIME OUT

  • The Cougars won their fourth tournament of the 2024-25 season last week, capturing the team title at their own tournament, the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational. 
  • Regan Barton and Diana Delgado tied for first, finishing the tournament with at 2-over 218. Barton won the playoff, carding back-to-back pars. 
  • This was Barton's second individual medalist honors, winning her first last season when she was crowned the 2024 CCAA Champion. 
  • Delgado won the 2022 CSUSM Fujikura Invitational as a freshman. 


GOLFER OF THE WEEK

  • Regan Barton and Diana Delgado were named CCAA Co-Golfers of the Week. 
  • This was Barton's first career CCAA Golfer of the Week award and Delgado's third.
  • CSUSM has been represented in five of the eight times the CCAA Golfer of the Week honor has been given out this season.

    THE PATRIOT INVITATIONAL 

    • This is the Cougars' fourth consecutive season competing in The Patriot Invitational. 
    • This is the first time the tournament will be held at Quail Lodge Golf Course in Carmel. 
    • The previous three tournaments were held at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach. 
    • The Cougars took second at the Patriot Invite last season, finishing with a 48-over 900 (302-295-303), 24 strokes behind first-place and host Dallas Baptist. 
    • In 2022, Dallas Baptist won the inaugural tournament with an 11-over 863.
    • Makenna Cabardo was CSUSM's top finisher last season, tying for third with a 7-over 220 (73-72-75). 
    • This year's field includes four nationally-ranked teams – No. 4 DBU, No. 6 CSUSM, No. 17 North Georgia and No. 20 Rogers State. 


    COUGAR OUTLOOK

    • For the second consecutive year, the squad added two new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Faith Hamstreet and Abby Sickles
    • The Cougars won their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2024, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by 27 strokes. 
    • Regan Barton become CSUSM's fourth CCAA Champion, recording a 2-under 214 at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. 
    • After a fifth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its third appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing 12th in stroke play. 


    THE HUTTON FILE

    • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
    • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times – six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
    • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
    • CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
    • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
    • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
    • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
