Murr, Shastri Named CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Madison Murr of women's golf and Sankalp Shastri of men's cross country have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month for October 2024.
The CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
Murr won two of the four tournaments in October while collecting runner-up in the other two that CSUSM competed in. For this, she earned CCAA Golfer of the Week honors on three occasions, moving her career total to 10. Murr shot par or under in nine of 10 rounds played this fall, moving her up to No. 4 in the Division II rankings. She also helped lead the Cougars to two wins this fall.
Shastri earned All-CCAA honors with a fifth-place finish at the CCAA Championships with a time of 24:26.3, leading the Cougars to a fourth-place finish on Oct. 25. Earlier in the month, Shastri placed 10th out of 336 runners at the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers Invitational on Oct. 12 with an 8K PR time of 24:03.7.
Murr and the women's golf team will return to the links next year at the La Spring Kickoff on Feb. 3-4. Shastri and the men's cross country team will head to Billings, Montana, for the NCAA West Regionals on Nov. 9 at 9 a.m.
This is Shastri's first CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month honor and is the third for Murr.
