No. 9 CSUSM to Conclude Fall Season in Hawai'i

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 9 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will wrap up its fall season this week in Hawaii, competing in the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on Oct. 21-22 and Hawai'i Hilo Southwest Airlines Hawai'i Pacific Shark Shootout on Oct. 25-26.


LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM destroyed the program's 54-hole tournament record with a 34-under 830 (279-270-281), recording a one-stroke victory over top-ranked Dallas Baptist at the National Preview in Boulder City, Nevada.
  • Madison Murr also set a new CSUSM 54-hole record with her 14-under 202 (70-66-66) performance that earned her runner-up honors.
  • Murr captured her second consecutive CCAA Golfer of the Week honor, the ninth of her career.

      DENNIS ROSE INTERCOLLEGIATE 

      • This is CSUSM's fourth time competing in the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate with the Cougars making their debut on Oct. 29-30, 2007. CSUSM took fifth place (1012, +148) out of 12 teams and was led by Carly Ludwig (247, +31) who tied for 8th.  
      • This marks the 15th time UHH will host the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate on the women's side.
      • Last season, then-No. 10 CSUSM broke program records while picking up its fourth consecutive tournament win of the fall season. The Cougars posted a 13-under 563 (280-283) to win the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate by 21 strokes.
      • Murr had collected her third individual medalist honor of the 2023 fall season after posting an 11-under 133. She followed up her opening round of 69 with a collegiate career-best 64.

      SOUTHWEST AIRLINES HPU SHARKS SHOOTOUT

      • This is CSUSM's third time competing in the HPU Shark Shootout. 
      • Hawai'i Pacific hosted the inaugural Shark Shootout for the women's golf team in 2021-22 and featured only three universities – Hawai'i Pacific, Hawai'i-Hilo and University of Hawai'i. 
      • In 2023, the then-No. 10 Cougars won their third consecutive tournament of the fall season with an 18-over 578 at the Southwest Airlines Hawaii Pacific Sharks Shootout. 
      • Madison Murr shot under par for the second consecutive day to claim the individual medalist honors with a 3-under 137 (68-69), winning by five strokes.

      COUGAR OUTLOOK

      • For the second consecutive year, the squad added two new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Faith Hamstreet and Abby Sickles
      • The Cougars won their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2024, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by 27 strokes. 
      • Regan Barton become CSUSM's fourth CCAA Champion, recording a 2-under 214 at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. 
      • After a fifth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its third appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing 12th in stroke play. 


      THE HUTTON FILE

      • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
      • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times – six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
      • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
      • CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
      • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
      • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
      • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
