RV CSUSM Comes Up Short at Chico State, 77-72

CHICO, Calif. – The RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (13-4, 10-2 CCAA) saw its seven-game win streak snapped on Thursday night, falling 77-72 at Chico State (12-6, 8-4 CCAA) in Art Acker Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After CSUSM went up 2-0, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Makenzi Laporte to force a Cougar timeout.
  • The Cougars took their second lead of the game on a 3-pointer from the left wing by Ava Ranson to make it 18-17 with one minute remaining in the first quarter.  
  • CSUSM held an 18-17 lead following the first quarter despite shooting 38.1% (8-of-21) to Chico State's 53.8% (7-of-13).
  • A Stella Rollo old-fashioned 3-point play put Chico State up 34-26 with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter.
  • With 14 points in the second quarter, Gallegos' two made free throws made it 38-all at the halftime break.
  • Gallegos led all scorers in the first half with 19 points in 17 minutes, going 7-of-11 from the field, 3-of-5 from the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line while tallying two steals and two assists.
  • CSUSM shot 44.1% (15-of-34) while the Wildcats turned in a 53.3 (16-of-30) field-goal percentage in the first half.
  • The Cougars sunk six 3-pointers while Chico only connected on one.
  • A 9-0 run that was capped by a Jadence Clifton 3-pointer put Chico up 56-45 with 1:09 left in the third.
  • The Wildcats outscored the Cougars 18-7 in the third quarter to take a 56-45 lead into the fourth quarter.  
  • Six consecutive free throws by Mina Tameilau cut Chico's lead to 56-53 with seven minutes remaining in the game.
  • A made back-end free throw by Reilly cut the gap to one point at 61-60 with just under five minutes remaining.
  • A Gallegos' layup from the ground evened the game at 66-all with 2:50 on the clock.
  • Two made free throws by Jordan Vasquez gave CSUSM its first lead of the second half at 68-66 with two minutes remaining.
  • Down 74-70, Vasquez scored on a layup with 16 seconds on the clock.
  • Clifton made one of two free throws to extend the Wildcats' lead to 75-72 with 14 seconds remaining.
  • Two made free throws by Laporte clinched the win for Chico State.
  • CSUSM went 0-of-14 from behind the 3-point line in the second half while Chico connected three on the same number of attempts.
     

FAST BREAK

  • CSUSM now has a two-game lead over second-place Chico State in the CCAA standings.
  • The Cougars recorded the exact same field-goal percentage they did in their last meeting against the Wildcats at 37.7% (23-of-61). Chico State improved on its field-goal percentage by one-tenth at 49.2 (29-of-59).
  • Gallegos' 28 points were one point shy of her single-game scoring record that she set on two occasions against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
  • Chico State won the battle of the boards, 39-32, but CSUSM finished with a slight lead on the o-boards against the Wildcats at 11-10.
  • Chico State got 38 points inside the paint to CSUSM's 26 while finishing with an advantage in fast breaks at 16-11.
  • The Wildcats finished with twice as many assists as CSUSM at 14-7.
  • Despite falling twice to the Wildcats this season, CSUSM remains on top in the all-time series at 10-6.

CSUSM will head north to Arcata to take on Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
