CSUSM Places Third in CCAA Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup
CHICO, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos Athletics placed third in the 2023-24 CCAA Robert J. Hiegert Commissioner's Cup standings. The award was announced at the conference's annual spring Executive Council meetings on Wednesday, June 5.
The award, named in honor of former long-time Commissioner and CCAA Hall of Famer Robert J. Hiegert, is given to the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member institution with the highest aggregate ranking in eight of the CCAA's 13 championship sports.
"I'm so proud of our incredible student-athletes, coaches and staff for this accomplishment," said CSUSM Interim Director of Athletics Morod Shah. "It's a reflection of the culture of excellence that we have here at CSUSM"
With 88.13 points, CSUSM finished just 1.02 points behind winner Chico State and just 0.5 behind second-place Cal Poly Pomona. The Cougars captured five conference championships and two more top-3 finishes during the 2023-24 campaign. The conference tournament titles went to women's soccer, women's basketball, women's golf and softball while women's basketball also won the regular-season title.
Last year, Cal State San Marcos won the Commissioner's Cup for the first time with 90.12 points, finishing 5.51 points ahead of Cal Poly Pomona. The Cougars became just the fourth athletic program to win the Commissioner's Cup since its inception in 2005-06. UC San Diego has the most titles, with eight, followed by Chico State with seven. Cal Poly Pomona won the other title in 2014-15.
An institution's Hiegert Cup ranking is calculated using its top two Conference finishes in the fall, winter, and spring sports seasons and the next two highest finishes, regardless of the season. The specific number of points garnered per sport is determined by the number of institutions sponsoring the sport.
