No. 23 CSUSM Splits Monday Doubleheader with Hawaii Pacific
IRVINE, Calif. – The No. 23 Cal State San Marcos softball team (6-1) earned a doubleheader split with Hawaii Pacific (5-4) on Monday afternoon at CSUSM Softball Field. The Cougars dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in the opener before recording a 10-1 mercy-ruled five-inning victory in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After 4.5 innings of scoreless softball, starting pitcher Savannah Coyle took the first pitch she faced over the right field wall for a solo home run to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead.
- In the top of the seventh, HPU's Angel Leigh "Hoku" Ching hit a two-out 2-RBI double off the left field wall to put the Sharks up 2-1.
QUICK HITS
- Coyle (2-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings in the circle.
- HPU's Layla Moina (2-0) earned the win after giving up just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out three.
- With her home run, Coyle kept her streak of reaching base safely to 13 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Paige Donnelly got CSUSM on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to right center field that plated Jordan Elias who reached on a leadoff bunt.
- The Cougars added three more runs in the third with two outs on an RBI double by Savannah Coyle, an RBI single by Aneesa Arredondo and a rundown by Mackenzie Kestler that enabled Arredondo to score.
- CSUSM scored six runs on six hits in the fourth inning. After driving in a run on a double to left center, Gianna Lombardi scored on a double steal with Czar Fleischman taking second, who later scored on an HPU error. The Cougars' final three runs came on an RBI double by Donnelly and RBI singles by Arredondo and Kestler.
- HPU prevented a shutout with a run in the top of the fifth inning on a CSUSM error.

- CSUSM starter Jayline Sloss (2-0) collected the win after allowing only one unearned run on five hits and one walk while striking out two in 5.0 innings.
- HPU's Maggie O'Dowd (0-2) took the loss after going 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits.
- Coyle extended her streak of reaching base safely to 14 games with two hits in the game.
- With two in the nightcap, Donnelly raised her double total on the season to a CCAA-leading five.
