CSUSM Staves Off Elimination With 3-1 Win Over CSUEB

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – After falling 3-1 to San Francisco State, the third-seeded Cal State San Marcos softball team (37-19) rallied for a 3-1 win over top-seeded Cal State East Bay in an elimination game of the CCAA Tournament presented by FloCollege on Thursday at Seawolf Softball Field on the campus of Sonoma State.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Gators took a 1-0 lead on a bases-loaded walk in the first inning.
  • SF State's second run of the game came in the second inning on a walk pitch that Emily Madrigal capitalized on.
  • An RBI single by Rylee McDaniel raised SF State's lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning.
  • The Cougars got on the board in the sixth on a Delaney Prater RBI single to left to make it 3-1.

  • CSUSM starting pitcher Savannah Coyle (11-8) took the loss after 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks while striking three batters.
  • SF State pitcher Mari Takeda Bajan (17-6) recorded the win after tossing a complete game, allowing seven hits on one run and three walks while fanning five.   
  • Madison Waymire saw her NCAA Division II era record streak of reaching base safely come to an end at 25 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM took a 3-0 lead in the second inning scoring on a bases-loaded walk and Paige Donnelly's 2-RBI single up the middle.
  • The Pioneers answered in the third with an RBI single to shortstop by Annelise Garcia.

QUICK HITS

  • CSUSM starting pitcher Jayline Sloss (16-8) collected the win after going 6.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out two.
  • Cougar reliever Dahlia Fink (3) earned the save after retiring the side in the seventh inning with two groundouts and a fly out.
  • CSUEB pitcher Ashlee Toy (13-6) took the loss after relinquishing three runs on five hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of work.

UP NEXT
The Cougars will play another elimination game at 2:30 p.m., facing the loser of the 12 p.m. game between second-seeded San Francisco State and fourth-seeded Sonoma State.
