SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Dre Johnson of men's track & field and Madison Murr of women's golf have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month for May 2024.
The CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
Johnson broke the program's 14-year-old 100-meter record in the prelims of the CCAA Championships with a time of 10.62. The Carson native then took bronze in the final with a time of 10.89 seconds and became the first Cougar to ever medal and earn All-CCAA honors in the 100-meter dash at the CCAA Championships. Because of his strong performance, Johnson was subsequently named the CCAA Freshman of the Meet.
Murr won NCAA Division II West Regional Individual Medalist honors with an 8-under 208 (72-67-69), becoming the first in program history to do so. At the NCAA Division II National Championships, the Los Alamitos native placed sixth with a 4-under 212 (70-68-74) and earned WGCA All-America first-team honors. Murr was also named to the WGCA All-Region team.
This is Johnson's first CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month honor and is the second for Murr.
