Badrani, Laiwa-McKay Named CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month

SAN MARCOS, Calif.Rasha Badrani of women's track & field and Kalathan Laiwa-McKay of men's track & field have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month for February 2025.

The CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.

Badrani ran the fastest indoor 400-meter time in Division II this season at 52.92 seconds at the Wolf Pack Classic, breaking her own school record by 3.14 seconds. Since the 2009-10 indoor season, there have only been five other 400-meter times less than 53 seconds on the NCAA Division II Indoor Qualifying Lists. Badrani also broke her own school record in the 200-meter dash with an NCAA provisional of 24.05 seconds. Badrani will be CSUSM's first-ever student-athlete to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Laiwa-McKay broke his own school record in the shot put with an NCAA provisional of 17.74 meters at the RCC Invitational. His shot put mark is currently first in Division II while his hammer throw mark of 49.94 meters ranks 10th.

This is the second Student-Athlete of the Month honor for both Badrani and Laiwa-McKay.
