Cougars Fall 2-1 to No. 3 Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES – In its final road game of the regular season, the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team (4-6-5, 0-6-2 ) took a 2-1 loss to No. 3 Cal State LA (9-0-5, 4-0-4 CCAA) on Sunday afternoon at University Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Well outside the top of the box, Ryan Meinardus let off a power shot that went into the upper right side of the net to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.
  • After a Golden Eagle free kick was headed away, LA's Matteo Costa gained possession before taking a high shot outside of the box and into the top left corner of the goal to knot the game at 1-1 in the 45th minute.
  • Tied 1-1 at halftime, CSUSM and LA each took eight shots in the first half while the Golden Eagles had more shots on goal at 5-3. The Cougars had the period's only two corner kicks.
  • Following a CSUSM foul outside the top right corner of the box, Costa took a curving free kick into the box before it was headed into the left side of the net by Marlon Radel from six yards out to give the Golden Eagles their first lead at 2-1 in the 50th minute.

 
QUICK KICKS

  • Meinardus' first-half goal was CSUSM's first against LA since 2016, and it was his team-leading eighth of the season.
  • Meinardus led the game with five shots.
  • LA ended the game with the edge in shots (16-10) and shots on goal (7-4) while both teams took two corner kicks.
  • The Golden Eagles had the slight edge in possession at 54%-46%.
