CSUSM Set to Compete at Otter Invitational

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The Cal State San Marcos men's golf team will head to the Monterey Peninsula for Cal State Monterey Bay's Otter Invitational on Oct. 14-15 at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, California.  


LAST TIME OUT

  • CSUSM took sixth place at the Bill Cullum Invitational that featured numerous NCAA Division I teams, including host Cal State Northridge. 
  • Gavin McCormick was CSUSM's top golfer with a 15-over 231 to finish in 18th place.

      CSUMB OTTER INVITATIONAL

      • CSUSM will make its ninth consecutive appearance in the Otter Invitational. 
      • The Cougars placed fifth out of 12 teams in 2023 with Patrick Jaksch leading the way for CSUSM with a share of ninth place (1-under 215). 
      • CSUSM's best team finish came in 2019 when the Cougars finished tied for second alongside CSUMB with a 15-over 879. Top-ranked Barry captured the 2019 team title with a 1-over 865.

      COUGAR OUTLOOK

      • With nine returners from the 2023-24 team, this year's squad has only one new face with the addition of Owen Otto
      • The 2023-24 team finished in the top 5 in seven of its 11 tournaments last year. 
      • The Cougars saw last season come to an end with a 16th-place finish in the NCAA West/South Central Regional Championship. 


      THE HUTTON FILE

      • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
      • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times, six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
      • The CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
      • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
      • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
      • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
      • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
