Cougars Fall to Gators, 70-60

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (10-17, 9-12 CCAA) was eliminated from postseason contention with a 70-60 loss to San Francisco State (17-12, 11-10) on Saturday afternoon at The Swamp.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a second-chance layup by Foster who also made a free throw just 45 seconds into the game.
  • Collins gave the Cougars their final lead of the game at 7-5 on a driving layup with 16:34 to go in the half.
  • The Gators took the lead for good on the next possession as Tyjean Burrell sank a 3-pointer to give SF State an 8-7 lead.
  • SF State took a double-digit lead at 29-19 as Burrell made the first of his two free throws with 4:58 remaining in the half.
  • The Gators took their largest lead of the half following a layup and free throw by Roth with 3:44 left in the period.
  • The Cougars trailed 41-29 after 20 minutes as they shot 34.5% (10-of-29) from the field while the Gators came in at 37.5% (12-of-32).
  • SF State opened the second half by taking its largest lead of the game at 44-29 with 19:38 to go.
  • CSUSM trimmed the deficit down to eight at 54-46 on a Max Tengan 3-pointer with 8:10 remaining, but the Cougars came no closer to the Gators' lead.
  • The Cougars outscored the Gators 31-29 in the second half while shooting 40% (10-of-25) to SF State's 30.8% (8-of-26).

 
FAST BREAKS

  • The Gators earned the sixth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament with the win.
  • SF State won the rebound battle (46-31) and tallied more blocks (5-0) while CSUSM had the advantage in assists (14-13), steals (9-7) and turnovers (15-12).
  • The Gators posted 18 second-chance points to the Cougars' five.
  • SF State won its third consecutive game against CSUSM.
  • Collins earned his fifth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 boards.
  • Collins moved into the top 10 in scoring for an individual season at CSUSM as he's now ninth with 480 points.
