Cougars Fall to Warriors in Overtime Heartbreaker

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (10-8, 7-6 CCAA) dropped an 83-80 overtime decision to Stanislaus State (9-10, 5-8 CCAA) on Thursday night at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSUSM opened the game on a 6-2 run behind early baskets from Max Tengan, Jaylin Leslie and Dexter Stratton before Stanislaus State answered with a 6-1 spurt to take an 8-7 lead.
  • The first half featured seven lead changes as both teams traded baskets and neither led by more than four points.
  • Tengan's driving layup just before the buzzer sent CSUSM into halftime ahead 36-35 after the Cougars shot 37.5% (12-of-32) from the field while the Warriors hit 53.6% (15-of-28).
  • Early in the second half, CSUSM built a 50-45 advantage, but the Warriors responded with a 13-4 run to regain the lead at 58-54 with 11:25 to go.
  • Down 71-69, a Warrior turnover led to a Keavie Love layup with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 71-71 and force overtime.
  • In overtime, a Love layup put the Cougars up 78-75 with 2:26 to play, but momentum swung the Warriors' way with a 6-0 run to go up 81-78 with 28 seconds remaining.
  • CSUSM brought the deficit down to one at 81-80 after two Love free throws, but Stan State made a pair of free throws to go up 83-80 with nine seconds remaining.
  • Following the Cougars' final timeout with just over a second remaining, the Warriors intercepted the inbound pass to conclude the game.
