Shots Go Cold for Cougars Against Broncos

POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (4-19, 4-13 CCAA) finished its weekend road trip with an 80-50 loss to Cal Poly Pomona (14-10, 9-9 CCAA) on Saturday at Kellogg Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars began the game with a 9-4 lead following a free throw from Micah Boone at the 14:47 mark.
  • A 10-0 run by the Broncos gave them a 14-9 lead after Caleb Nelson hit a jumper with 12:30 to go in the half.
  • CSUSM went on an 8-0 run right after as a 3-pointer by Mikey Aikhionbare retook the lead at 17-14 with 9:53 left in the period.
  • The Cougars' final lead of the game came after a Keavie Love 3-pointer to make it 20-18 with 8:01 to go in the half.
  • The first half ended with CPP up 38-27.
  • CSUSM shot 36.4% (8-of-22) from the field in the first half while CPP came in at 55.2% (16-of-29).
  • The second half was all Broncos as they outscored the Cougars 42-23 and took their largest lead of the game at 33 points with 3:52 remaining.
  • CSUSM was held to just 21.4% (6-of-28) from the field in the final 20 minutes while CPP shot 63.3% (19-of-30).

 
FAST BREAKS

  • The Cougars ended the game shooting a season-low 28% (14-of-50) from the field while the Broncos finished at 59.3% (35-of-59).
  • CPP led in rebounds (32-31), assists (17-11), steals (11-6) and blocks (3-2) while committing fewer turnovers (12-18).
  • Half of the Broncos' 80 points came in the paint while they scored 21 points off turnovers.
  • CSUSM had more fastbreak points at 13-11.

CSUSM will return to The Sports Center to begin its final homestand of the season on Monday as it takes on Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
