SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Edwyn Collins of men's basketball and Charity Gallegos of women's basketball have been named the Cal State San Marcos Student-Athletes of the Month for December 2023.
The CSUSM Student-Athletes of the Month awards are determined through a vote of all Department of Athletics coaches, administrators and staff. Each in-season program nominates a student-athlete to be considered for the award each month.
Collins led CSUSM with 14.5 points and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 49.3% from the field and averaging 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. The redshirt senior from Moreno Valley tallied a career-high 18 points against both Central Washington and Sonoma State while putting up a career-best seven assists against the Wildcats. Collins ended the month with five consecutive games of 13 points or more while earning at least two steals in each game.
Gallegos led the Cougars with 18.5 points per game, a 45.8 field-goal percentage, a 43.6 3-point field-goal percentage and 17 made 3-pointers. She also averaged 4.0 rebounds, 1.74 assists and 1.0 steals per game. The junior from Sacramento ended the month with three consecutive 20-plus point performances and had at least three 3-pointers in all four December games.
This is Gallegos' second CSUSM Student-Athlete of the Month honor and is the first for Collins.
