CSUSM Earns Seven-Run Win Over Montana State Billings

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (3-2) took the second game of its four-game series against Montana State Billings (2-2) with a 10-3 victory on Friday afternoon at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars broke open the scoring in the bottom of the third. After an RBI double by Reece that scored Sean McGrew, Morrell hit a two-run double to left to make it 3-0. As Luna walked on seven pitches, a wild pitch allowed Pacino to score from third. Spencer Davis wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single to left and made it 5-0.
  • CSUSM tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth as Pacino hit a one-out RBI single to right center to make it 6-0.
  • The Cougars took a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth as Luna scored from third on a sacrifice bunt by Niko Diaz.
  • Morrell hit a two-run double for the second time in the bottom of the sixth inning and gave the Cougars a 9-0 lead. An RBI single through the right side by Spencer Davis capped CSUSM's scoring for the day and gave the Cougars a 10-lead.
  • In the top of the ninth, the Yellowjackets finally got on the board with an RBI single to center by Bodee Wright, a wild pitch that scored Colby Kiesling and an RBI single to second by Cole Dawson. A fly out to center ended the game and gave the Cougars a seven-run win.

  • CSUSM starter Pat MacDonald Jr. (1-0) earned the win as he tossed five scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just three hits allowed. In two starts, he has yet to allow a run in nine innings of work.
  • MSUB starter Andy Evans (0-1) took the loss as he allowed six runs on eight hits, four walks and a hit-by-pitch in just 3.1 innings.
  • McGrew and Reece have each reached base in all five games this season.
  • The Cougars walked eight times – its most in the season's first five games.
