Cougars Take Series Opener Against Broncos, 6-4
POMONA, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (20-13, 19-9 CCAA) took the series opener at Cal Poly Pomona (19-15, 15-10 CCAA) with a 6-4 victory on Friday night at Scolinos Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Broncos went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI triple down the right field line by Marco Malerba and a sac fly to center by Anthony Gibbons.
- The Cougars tied it up in the top of the third as Phoenix Sommay scored from third on a failed pickoff attempt to first before an RBI single through the right side by Rivera.
- CSUSM took a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a sac fly to center by Rivera and Teunissen stealing home.
- CPP knotted the game at 4-all in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single through the right side by Jack Sanders and a balk that later scored him from third.
- A two-run blast to left by Mahaffy gave the Cougars the lead once again at 6-4 in the top of the seventh.
QUICK HITS
- CSUSM matched its CCAA single-season win record from 2019 with its 19th conference victory.
- This was the Cougars' first-ever win at Scolinos Field in 13 attempts.
- CSUSM starter Roman Connolly (5-1) earned the win as he struck out two while allowing four runs (three hits) on six hits in 6.1 innings.
- CPP reliever Drew Atherton (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three in 3.0 innings.
- Cougar reliever Preston Kelly (S, 6) picked up the save after throwing a strikeout and allowing just one walk in 2.0 innings of work.
- Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 28 games.
- This was Mahaffy's 10th multi-RBI game of the year – second most on the team.
- CSUSM remains first in the CCAA standings and is a half-game ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay.
