CSUSM Sweeps Doubleheader Against Stanislaus

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In a two-game series shortened by rain and poor field conditions, the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (10-9, 5-5 CCAA) swept Sunday's doubleheader against Stanislaus State (10-14, 5-9 CCAA) by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Warriors came out of the gate swinging with a solo shot by Arthur Navarette Jr. before an RBI bunt single by Robert Valdivia to go up 2-0 in the top of the first.
  • Mateo Lake knotted the game at 2-all in the bottom of the first with a two-run double.
  • CSUSM took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Ethan Rivera.
  • Hayden Tregidga gave the Cougars a 6-2 lead.
  • A bases-loaded walk by Danny Murphy cut Stanislaus' lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth before a flyout and groundout ended the threat.

  • CSUSM starter Spencer Anderson (3-0) picked up the win after striking out five while allowing two earned runs on five hits, two hit-by-pitches and a walk in 6.0 innings.
  • Stanislaus starter Austin Balentine (2-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 2.2 innings.
  • Cougar reliever Nate Brouse earned his first save of the year after striking out two and allowing just one walk in 1.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • As CSUSM grounded into a double play, Phoenix Sommay scored the game's first run to put the Cougars up 1-0 in the first.
  • The Cougars struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. After a double steal, an overthrown ball to third allowed Sommay to score to make it 2-0. Zavien Watson then laid down an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Garrett Teunissen before an RBI single by Cameron Mahaffy scored Hayden Tregidga to make it a 4-0 game.
  • An RBI single to center by Sommay scored Blake Browning in the bottom of the sixth to give CSUSM a 5-0 lead.
  • Stanislaus scored its lone run in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Jacob Baker to cut the deficit to 5-1.
  • An RBI single up the middle by Jake Callahan put CSUSM up 6-1 in the bottom of the eighth.

  • The win gave CSUSM a 14-13 lead in the all-time series against Stanislaus and was its fourth in a row dating back to last season.
