CSUSM Earns Four-Game Sweep of Saint Martin's

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (4-0) earned a 6-5 win in the resumption of the series' third game before earning a four-game series sweep with a 12-5 victory in the finale on Sunday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars began the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Phoenix Sommay scored on a passed ball before a two-run homer by Hayden Tregidga.
  • The Saints cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the third after a sacrifice fly by Hunter Sasaki and an Evan Nicol single up the middle.
  • An RBI double by Mateo Lake in the bottom of the third gave CSUSM a 4-2 lead.
  • A solo shot by Marco Pirruccello put the Cougars up 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Garrett Teunissen hit CSUSM's third homer of the game in the bottom of the fifth as a solo shot to left center gave CSUSM a 6-2 lead.
  • The Saints fought back in the top of the sixth with a bases-loaded walk by Zen Staszkow before a two-run single by Sasaki cut the Cougars' lead to 6-5.
  • With darkness encroaching, Saint Martin's loaded the bases with a single and two walks in the top of the seventh before the game was suspended with two outs and a 1-0 count. When play resumed on Sunday, Nolan Long came on in relief and just need three consecutive strikes to end the game and give CSUSM a 3-0 lead for the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evan Scalley picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first to give CSUSM an early 1-0 lead.
  • A bases-loaded walk by Collin Bell knotted the game at 1-1 in the top of the second.
  • The Cougars took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI triple by Nico Vallarello before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Weaver.
  • A three-run bomb by Bell gave Saint Martin's a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth.
  • A two-run double down the left field line by Garrett Teunissen put the Cougars back on top at 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Saints knotted the game at 5-all with a solo shot by Alex Hartnett in the top of the fifth.
  • CSUSM scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Zavien Watson scored on an SMU throwing error before an RBI double by Jake Callahan and an RBI single by Teunissen to make it 8-5.
  • Another three-run inning by the Cougars made it 11-5 in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot by Scalley, an RBI groundout by Vallarelli and an RBI single by Weaver.
  • CSUSM's final run came in the bottom of the eighth as Isaiah Monge posted an RBI groundout to short as Blake Browning scored to make it 12-5.

  • This is CSUSM's first 4-0 start since 2019 and first four-game sweep against a non-conference opponent since defeating Concordia University Irvine in 2017 in a home-and-home series.
