Errors Cost CSUSM in 5-4 Loss to No. 1 Tampa
SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Errors proved costly for the Cal State San Marcos baseball team (7-7) as it fell 5-4 to No. 1 Tampa (15-2) in the series opener at CSUSM Baseball Field on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tampa scored first in the top of the third. As JD Urso stole second, a throwing error to third allowed Urso and Maddox King to score and give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
- The Spartans went up 4-0 in the top of the fourth on an RBI double to center by Lenny Ashby and an RBI double to right center by King.
- The Cougars began chipping away at the Spartans' lead in the bottom of the fourth as Mateo Lake hit a solo shot to right for his third homer of the season and narrowed the gap to 4-1.
- An RBI groundout by Hayden Tregidga cut the deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
- CSUSM knotted the game at 4-all in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of solo jacks by Dylan Unangst and Phoenix Sommay.
- Still tied at 4-4 entering the top of the ninth, Jacob Griffith walked before AJ Graham to pinch run for the Spartans. A failed pickoff attempt allowed Griffith to advance to third before scoring on a wild pitch to give Tampa a 5-4 lead.
- The Cougars had a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the ninth as Hayden Tregidga hit a one-out double down the left field line, but a strikeout and groundout ended the game.

- Tampa reliever Michael Alfonso (1-0) earned the win after throwing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out two while allowing three hits and a walk.
- CSUSM reliever Trevor Eby (1-1) took the loss after allowing an unearned run and walk while striking out two in an inning of work.
- This was the first-ever meeting between CSUSM and Tampa.
- The Cougars outhit the Spartans, 11-7.
- Tregidga improved his reached-base streak to a team-leading 10 games.
