SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The No. 17 Cal State San Marcos softball team (17-4, 5-3 CCAA) will play an altered schedule this week against Sonoma State (14-13, 4-8 CCAA). The series has been moved to Santa Rosa Junior College with the doubleheaders slated to begin at noon on Thursday and Friday.  

LAST TIME OUT

• The Cougars recorded a doubleheader sweep at Biola in their Feb. 15 makeup. 
• CSUSM recorded a come-from-behind 7-5 victory in game one before registering a 3-1 win in the nightcap. 
• Jayline Sloss matched her career-best of eight strikeouts for the fifth time to pick up her sixth win of the season in the 3-1 victory.                               

COUGARS BY THE NUMBERS

• CSUSM moved to second in the CCAA with a .337 batting average, ranking 25th in NCAA Division II. 
• The Cougars are also No. 2 in the conference in home runs per game (0.57), home runs (12), on base percentage (.403), runs per game (5.29), sacrifice flies (9) and walks (62). 
• CSUSM ranks 11th in NCAA Division II with 11 double plays and 0.52 double plays per game. 
• The Cougars have the third-best fielding percentage in the CCAA at .968. 
• CSUSM is posting 4.52 RBIs per game, ranking third in the league. 
• CSUSM has registered 190 hits this season, ranking third in the CCAA. 
• Four Cougars are ranked in the top 7 in the CCAA in batting average – Jillian Albayati is in third (.429) while Paige Donnelly (.415), Savannah Coyle (.410) and Delaney Prater (.409) are fifth through seventh, respectively. 
• Coyle is ranked 10th in Division II with three saves so far this season. 
• Donnelly's 17 RBIs rank sixth in the CCAA. 
• Albayati is fourth in the nation with 3.34 assists per game. 
• Jayline Sloss has the fourth-best ERA in the CCAA at 1.55. 
• Madison Waymire ranks fifth in the conference with 19 runs. 

COUGARS-SEAWOLVES SHOWDOWN

• The Seawolves dropped a four-game series 1-3 at San Francisco State last weekend, splitting Friday's doubleheader with a 2-1 loss and a 10-6 win before falling twice on Saturday, 1-0 and 2-0. 
• Sonoma State opened CCAA play with just one win in the four-game series at Cal State East Bay, being swept in the Friday doubleheader, 5-4 and 8-3 before claiming a 3-1 win. The Seawolves fell 3-2 in the series finale. 
• The Seawolves have the worst fielding percentage in the CCAA at .939. 
• SSU has the fourth-best RBI total at 97. 
• The Seawolves are leading the CCAA with 11 triples, ranking 14th in the nation.  
• SSU ranks second in the conference with 32 stolen bases and a 1.19 stolen bases per game average. 
• Charlie Johnson has recorded a conference-best 10 complete games while tallying the sixth-best ERA in the CCAA at 1.66. 
• Three Seawolves rank in the top 10 in the CCAA in stolen bases – Sophia Newcomb is third (12), Amari Houston is sixth (9) and Olivia Gabriel is ninth (7). 
• SSU leads the all-time series at 19-10 against CSUSM. 
• The last time CSUSM played Sonoma State on the road was in the 2022 NCAA West Regional when the Cougars run-ruled the Seawolves 13-1 in the tournament opener after scoring 10 runs in the first inning. 
• The Seawolves were picked to finish second in the 2025 CCAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll. 

2025 OUTLOOK

• CSUSM was picked to finish first in the 2025 CCAA Preseason Softball Coaches Poll. 
• The Cougars' roster of 26 consists of 17 returners, one transfer and eight freshman. 
• Athletically, the Cougars are made up of four redshirt seniors, six seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and eight freshman. 
• The Cougars' 53-game schedule includes 28 home contests and 25 road games.

THE ROBINSON FILE

• Head Coach A.J. Robinson was promoted to the top spot on July 31, 2024. 
• As the program's assistant coach from 2022-24, Robinson helped guide CSUSM to three NCAA Division II West Regional appearances, an NCAA National Championship appearance, a West Regional Championship, a CCAA Regular-Season Championship and a CCAA Tournament Championship.
• For the 2021 season, Robinson was a volunteer assistant coach at San Diego State and helped the Aztecs to an overall record of 28-16.
• Robinson's first stint at CSUSM was as a volunteer assistant coach from 2018-20 where he was named CSUSM Athletics' Volunteer Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020.
• Robinson was the founder and president of The Factory Softball Club in San Diego until 2024. In 2018 and 2019, he and his coaching staff earned West Region Travel Ball Coaching Staff of the Year honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).
