No. 18 CSUSM Drops Two at CSUDH

CARSON, Calif. – The No. 18 Cal State San Marcos softball team (33-14, 19-11 CCAA) suffered back-to-back walk-off home run losses to Cal State Dominguez Hills (29-20, 16-14 CCAA) on Friday at Toro Field in Carson.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Toros jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run by Alexis Aquado in the first inning.
  • After loading the bases with three singles from Mackenzie Kestler, Makenzie Guiliano and Brooklyn Ury, Madison Waymire hit a two-out grand slam to right center in the top of the second to give CSUSM a 4-1 lead.
  • CSUDH doubled its run total with an RBI double from Lillianna Garcia in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Toros evened the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-RBI single by Kaylee Hull.
  • CSUDH took a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth on a passed ball and RBI single by Aquado.
  • The Cougars evened the game in the top of the seventh with two-out RBI singles by pinch hitter Rae D'Amato and Waymire.
  • After Rico reached first on a CSUSM error to begin the bottom of the seventh, Hull crushed a two-run homer to left center for the walk-off win.

  • CSUSM relief pitcher Savannah Coyle (10-6) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits in 1.0 inning.  
  • CSUDH pitcher Lillianna Garcia (14-3) recorded the win after allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.0 in the circle.  
  • Madison Waymire extended her streak of reaching base safely to a team's season-high 17 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After retiring the side in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, CSUSM pitcher Dahlia Fink gave up a solo home run to Kaylee Hull to begin the seventh inning.

  • CSUDH pitcher Ashley Ogata (10-11) collected the win after tossing a complete game shutout, allowing four hits and no walks.

  • With the two losses, CSUSM is now three games back from CCAA leader Cal State East Bay in the conference standings.
