Cougars Fall 9-6 in Series Opener to Seawolves

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (13-15, 8-11 CCAA) fell 9-6 in its series opener at Sonoma State (9-24, 6-18 CCAA) on Friday at Seawolf Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer by Evan Merz.
  • An RBI single to left center by Chris Ortiz gave the Seawolves a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third.
  • CSUSM broke up the shutout in the top of the fourth with a two-out RBI single to right center by Evan Scalley to make it 3-1.
  • Merz struck again for the Seawolves in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out, two-run double to put SSU up 5-1.
  • A five-run sixth inning gave CSUSM its first lead of the day at 6-5 after Mateo Lake hit a three-run homer before an RBI single from Zavien Watson, who then scored on an error.
  • SSU retook the lead at 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth after Gabriel Tapia scored on an error before a sacrifice fly from Bryson McArn.
  • The Seawolves added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI fielder's choice to second by McArn and a bases-loaded balk that scored Ryan Tiger to go up 9-6.

 
QUICK HITS

  • SSU reliever Herman Luna (1-2) earned the win after allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out three in 3.0 innings.
  • CSUSM reliever Masen McDonnell (2-1) took the loss after allowing two unearned runs on two hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in two-thirds of an inning.
  • David Howard earned the save for the Seawolves after allowing just one walk while recording a strikeout in 1.1 innings.
  • Lake's homer was his fourth of the season.
  • Trey Becker increased his reached-base streak to nine games – the longest active streak on the team.
