Turnovers Cost Cougars Against Golden Eagles

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos men's basketball team (1-12, 1-6 CCAA) fell 87-67 against Cal State LA (6-8, 4-4 CCAA) on Saturday at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Golden Eagles got out to a 16-4 lead over the Cougars capped on a Jaden Lazo layup at 12:50 of the first half. 
  • A 11-3 run by CSUSM cut the deficit to 24-20 with 7:10 remaining in the opening half. 
  • A Love old-fashioned 3-point play made it 27-25 at 4:51, but the Golden Eagles answered with a 3-pointer by Shane Bell on the next possession to spark a 13-0 run to end the half and give LA a 40-25 lead.
  • CSUSM shot 40.9% (9-of-22) from the field in the first half while LA came in at 44.4% (16-of-36).
  • The Cougars had the rebounding edge in the first 20 minutes at 21-14 but committed 17 turnovers to the Golden Eagles' five.
  • LA scored seven consecutive points to begin the half, giving it a 22-0 run dating back to the first half and a 47-25 lead with 18:30 to go.
  • The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 71-44 on a Jaden Lazo 3-pointer with 9:05 to play.
  • The Cougars were only able to cut the deficit down to 20 at 87-67 on layup and free throw by Micah Boone with 41 seconds remaining.
  • LA shot 66.7% (18-of-27) from the field in the second half while going 80% (8-of-10) from downtown. CSUSM finished the half at 48.3% (14-of-29) while going 5-of-15 (33.3%) from beyond the arc.

 
FAST BREAKS

  • CSUSM ended the game shooting 45.1% (23-of-51) from the field while LA clocked in at 54% (34-of-63) from the field and 56.5% (13-of-23) from 3-point land.
  • The Cougars won the rebound battle at 38-23 while tallying 17 offensive boards. CSUSM also tied a season high with six blocked shots to LA's two.
  • The Golden Eagles led the way in assists (17-7) and steals (13-7) while committing fewer turnovers (11-24).
  • LA was able to score 30 points off turnovers to CSUSM's 13.
  • The Cougars scored 22 second-chance points to the Golden Eagles' seven.
  • Love matched his career high with 22 points.
  • Boone's nine boards and two blocks were a career high.
