Cougars Open CCAA Play with 12-2 Win Over Toros

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (5-1, 1-0 CCAA) began conference play with a 12-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-6, 0-1 CCAA) on Friday at CSUSM Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Toros got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo homer from Teige Barrett.
  • The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as Phoenix Sommay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Tyler Weaver scored on a wild pitch.
  • CSUSM took a 5-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Marco Pirruccello and an RBI double to center by Trey Becker.
  • The bottom of the sixth saw the Cougars go up 7-1 on a solo shot by Garrett Teunissen and an RBI double by Cameron Mahaffy.
  • A passed ball scored a Toro run in the top of the seventh to make it a 7-2 game.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, an attempted safety squeeze by Sommay turned into an RBI single as Rivera scored to put CSUSM up 8-2.
  • CSUSM scored the game's final four runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Dylan Unangst, a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for Zavien Watson, an RBI fielder's choice by Jake Callahan and a CSUDH throwing error that scored Unangst to make it 12-2.

  • CSUSM starter Spencer Anderson (2-0) earned the win after throwing five strikeouts while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in 6.1 innings.
  • CSUDH starter Dylan Goodrich (1-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on two walks, a hit and a hit-by-pitch in 1.1 innings.
  • Sommay extended his program-record reached-base streak to 48 games.
  • This was CSUSM's fifth consecutive win against CSUDH.
  • The Cougars' 10-run win tied for the largest margin of victory in the all-time series against the Toros.
