RV CSUSM Topples RV CSULA in CCAA Opener, 73-43

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – In both team's CCAA opener, the RV Cal State San Marcos women's basketball team (4-2, 1-0 CCAA) took down conference-favorite Cal State LA (3-2, 0-1 CCAA) 73-43 on Thursday night in The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars came out on fire, taking a 25-13 lead following the first quarter.
  • CSUSM shot 60.0% (9-of-15) from the field in the opening 10 minutes while holding LA to 33.3% (4-of-12).
  • The Cougars took a 43-27 lead into the break after shooting 46.7% (14-of-30) from the field while their defense held the Golden Eagles to 25.0% (7-of-28).
  • Gallegos led CSUSM with 10 points including two 3-pointers in the first half.
  • LA's Lily Buggs led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 11 points on a 6-of-6 performance at the charity stripe.
  • A jumper by Vasquez at the corner of the free throw line put CSUSM up by 30 points (63-33) with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter.
  • CSUSM never allowed the Golden Eagles within 25 points in the fourth quarter, finishing the night with a 73-43 victory.
     

FAST BREAKS

  • CSUSM shot 47.4% (27-of-57) for the game while holding the Golden Eagles to 26.4% (14-of-53).
  • CSUSM extended its win streak over LA to 11 consecutive games and is now 12-5 in the all-time series against the Golden Eagles.
  • The Cougars tallied eight 3-pointers in the contest, shooting 42.1% from behind the arc.
  • Twenty-eight of Cougars' points came from inside the pain while 26 came from their bench. 
  • CSUSM tallied 19 points off LA's 14 turnovers. 
  • The Cougars won the battle of the boards, 47-34. 
  • For the third consecutive game, San Marcos led wire-to-wire, never trailing in the game.  
  • Vasquez earned her fourth double-double of the season (15 pts, 11 reb.) and the 30th of her collegiate career.
  • The last time CCAA 3-pointer single-season record holder Nicole Flennaugh was held to just one made 3-pointer in the regular season was against CSUSM in the Sports Center on New Year's Day last season.
