Cougars Split Season's Final Doubleheader at Stanislaus State

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team (26-17, 25-13 CCAA) split its final regular-season doubleheader at Stanislaus State (16-25-1, 12-21 CCAA) with a 5-1 loss in the first game before a 4-2 win in the second game on Saturday at Warrior Baseball Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Warriors went up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double to left center by Kyle Rachels before a sacrifice fly to right by Chris Catalano scored JD Madrigal in the next at-bat.
  • As Stanislaus grounded into a 5-3 double play, Alex Solis scored and put the Warriors up 4-0.
  • After a double steal by Stan State, Jerry Nix hit an infield RBI single to short to score Catalano and give the Warriors a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
  • The Cougars scored their lone run in the top of the ninth inning. With runners in scoring position and one out, McGrew hit a sac fly down the right-field line to score Mahaffy and make it a 5-1 game. A CSUSM groundout to first ended any hopes of a comeback and concluded the game.

 
QUICK HITS

  • With the loss, CSUSM cannot win the CCAA Regular-Season Championship this weekend and will now rely on the results of Cal State Monterey Bay's and Cal Poly Pomona's games next weekend.
  • Stanislaus State starter Caleb Bertoncino (2-0) pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on six hits, three hit-by-pitches, and a walk with 106 pitches.
  • CSUSM starter Sammy Murphy took (2-4) the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out one in 7.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After a leadoff walk by Sommay and advancing to second on a failed pickoff attempt, he scored on an RBI single up the middle by Teunissen.
  • CSUSM went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second as Victor Castaneda scored on a wild pitch.
  • An RBI double by Luna in the top of the fourth gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
  • Sommay picked up an RBI on a sacrifice bunt attempt that scored McGrew and put CSUSM up 4-0 in the top of the sixth.
  • Stan State got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single up the middle by Chris Catalano and a CSUSM throwing error that scored Catalano to make it 4-3.
  • The Cougars put the Warriors away in the bottom of the seventh with two strikeouts and a pop up to win the game.

  • Phoenix Sommay extended his reached-base streak to 38 – tying for the third longest in program history.
  • Cougar starter Spencer Anderson (3-1) earned the win after striking out three and allowing just four hits in 5.0 innings.
  • Warrior starter Tony Jacob (2-5) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on five walks, four hits and a hit-by-pitch in 3.1 innings.
  • Teunissen now has a team-leading 21 multi-hit games.
