No. 9 CSUSM Competes at National Preview

SAN MARCOS, Calif. –  The No. 9 Cal State San Marcos women's golf team will compete in the National Preview on Oct. 7-8 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada. 


COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • Competing on the course that will be the site of the 2025 West Regional Championships, the Cougars placed third with a 36-over 88 behind West Texas A&M (874, +22) and St. Mary's (885, +33). 
  • Madison Murr picked up runner-up honors with a 1-under 212 (65-72-75). 
  • Makenna Cabardo broke into the top 10 in the final round with a 3-over 74, finishing the tournament with an 8-over 221 (77-70-74) for a share of 10th place.

NATIONAL COURSE

  • This is CSUSM's first time competing on the Boulder City Golf Course. 
  • UNLV will host the 2025 NCAA Division II Women's Golf National Championship at Boulder City Golf Course on May 13-17. 
  • Eleven of the 14 teams competing in the National Preview also played in the WT Regional Preview last week. The three new teams CSUSM will face are Hawaii Hilo, Vanguard and host Missouri-St. Louis.

MURR EARNS EIGHTH CAREER CCAA WEEKLY HONOR

  • Madison Murr collected her eighth career CCAA Golfer of the Week honor last week. 
  • Murr began her senior year with a 1-under 213 for runner-up honors at the WT Regional Preview last week. 
  • Murr opened play by shooting a tournament-best 6-under 65 to take over the top spot on the leaderboard. She followed up with rounds of 1-over 72 and 4-over 75 to finish as one of only two golfers to shoot under par on the 2025 regional course. 
  • Murr's eight Golfer of the Week awards tie her with former teammate Breann Horn for the second-most in CCAA history. Former Cougar and 2019 NCAA National Champion Jaime Jacob holds the record with an astonishing 13 Golfers of the Week. 

COUGAR OUTLOOK

  • For the second consecutive year, the squad added two new Cougars in the lineup — freshmen Faith Hamstreet and Abby Sickles
  • The Cougars won their fifth consecutive CCAA Championship title in 2024, defeating second-place Cal State Monterey Bay by 27 strokes. 
  • Regan Barton become CSUSM's fourth CCAA Champion, recording a 2-under 214 at the Santa Rosa Golf & Country Club. 
  • After a fifth-place finish in the NCAA West Regional, CSUSM made its third appearance in the NCAA National Championships, finishing 12th in stroke play. 


THE HUTTON FILE

  • Head coach Greg Hutton has been at the helm of the men's program since the 2010-11 season and was named the women's head coach in 2014.
  • Hutton has been named CCAA Coach of the Year a total of seven times – six times on the women's side and one time on the men's side. 
  • The CSUSM women's team was the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up, led by National Champion Jaime Jacob.
  • CSUSM men's golfer Matt Pennington was the program's first-ever CCAA Champion and NCAA West/South Central Regional Champion in 2022. 
  • Under Hutton's leadership, the women's team won CSUSM's first CCAA Championship in school history in 2018 and the Cougars defended their title in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2024. 
  • In 2023, the CSUSM men's team captured its first-ever CCAA Championship Tournament Title, defeating runner-up Cal State Monterey by one stroke on April 19 at the Victory Club in Riverside. 
  • In CSUSM's first year of being a full-fledged NCAA Division II member in 2017-18, the Cougar men's and women's golf teams each qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships.
