CSUSM Drops Three Sets to Vanguard

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team (0-2) fell in three sets (22-25, 24-26, 25-27) to Vanguard (2-0) in its second game of the Point Loma/CSUSM San Diego Invitational on Friday afternoon at The Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Vanguard held the lead up until CSUSM tied it at 22-all on an ace by Bakken. The Lions then rattled off three consecutive points to win the set 25-22.
  • The Cougars got out to an 11-6 lead early but the Lions came back to knot the set at 16-all. Staying within two points of each other the rest of the way, both teams remained tied at 24-24. Vanguard then earned a kill and block to win the second set and take a 2-0 lead for the match.
  • Vanguard began the third set on a 10-5 run before CSUSM took the set lead for the first time at 15-14 on a Thomas kill. Tied at 16, the Cougars scored five consecutive points to go up 21-16 on a block by Bakken and Thomas. With its back against a wall at 24-20, the Lions scored four straight points to tie it at 24-all. After a kill by Kranz gave CSUSM a 25-24 lead, three consecutive kills by Vanguard handed the Lions the set and match.

  • Vanguard improved to 2-0 overall while CSUSM dropped to 0-2.

CSUSM will head to Point Loma to continue the Point Loma/CSUSM San Diego Invitational on Saturday as it faces Chadron State at 11 a.m. before facing Point Loma at 4 p.m.
